This is sad. I've never had to deal with a situation like this first hand, but I keep trying to tell myself that if I was there, it would have been different.

I mean, I was at a bar a couple years ago, and a guy started beating up on a hooker, and I was about to jump in to protect the hooker, but my friends held me back, and they were like, "dood, think about it". I'm not saying that about the victim in this case, but this is more instrospective. Come to think of it, there is no question about it. I am not that strong, but if I was in that coffee shop, I would be chopped up, and that girl would be alive.

Well sure, something awful and violent is happening all the time. We have over 6.5 billion people on the planet, and over 300 million in the U.S. I'm sure many other people were killed violently on the same day in this country, but it's the location and the way she was murdered that really make it bizarre and news-worthy.

No news channel or website would stay in business if they highlighted the good things in society all the time. But fortunately for us, the good things are the norm, and the bad things are the weird and ugly exceptions.

In 16th century Europe or China, someone getting decapitated wouldn't be so uncommon. Then again, they didn't have the gun problems that we do, so it's not really a fair comparison....

Or 20th century Saudi Arabia, so a workmate of mine who worked there for years attests. Pretty common in the public square.
