Default Has anyone tried sandwhiching magnets?

I have been known for doing weird things like cutting magnets lengthwise to get the sum of both magnets (ceramic/Alnico 5). I was wondering if anyone has stacked two magnets to do the same thing? I have a Dimarzio Megadrive and it leaves me wanting. The Megadrive has a ceramic and I was thinking of stacking it with a Alnico 5 to sum the two.

It's been tried but stacking magnets will degauss them.

Do they sum over the long term or do they just degrade each other and the strongest wins.

I'm curious about this. Is it the stacking of magnets, period, that degausses them, or stacking them in a certain manner (like poles facing, like poles opposing) that does it?

i just read somewhere on the forum that if they are like magnets like both A2'S or A5's they wont degauss each other, and ceramic will always degauss alnico. this person was saying u can store like magnets stacked together and not worry about it (let us know how that goes, cuz i aint tryin it)

I store my magnets by sticking them together however they naturally align, and I haven't had any problems yet. Although, I do have a neo disk magnet that I can use to regauss them should anything happen...

one day i'll have to try this, i've got excessive amounts of alnicos in most varieties(1 extra a5, 2 extra a4, 4 extra a2, and 2 extra 8s)

*shameless plug* anybody need an extra mag? i'll sell'em to ya fer cheap

    Keep experimenting with magnets!

I tried this in a PU. It had a double thick ceramic, which was too bright & harsh, so I used two alnicos (A8 and A2) to fill the space, with them attracting each other. The A8 was on top (closest to the coils) and was the dominate magnet. The sound was slightly out of phase, but not excessively.

I think there's lots of potential in using two magnets in a HB; not sure of the best way to do it; but this is method is worth playing around with.

Stacking magnets will NOT work like you want it to! Magnetic flux flows in a circuit, just like electricity. In other words, it has to see a closed "loop".

When you put 2 mags together such that they stick together, the direction of the magnetic domains makes a loop and they no longer point outwards nearly as much as they did separately. As such, the magnets are not doing what they are supposed to, which is to direct the flux up the poles and toward the strings.

Now putting 2 mags together such that they DON'T stick will degauss them because they are "fighting" each other and the domains will reach equilibrium roughly in the direction of the stronger magnet.

By the way you can always store magnets such that they all stick together in the same direction. Anything else will slightly degauss them over time.
