    Question Neil Schon

Anybody know what pups he used in the Journey dayz? I remember he had a black LP that sounded good.

I think it was stock Gibson pickups.
Although the guy plays really good, I was never a fan of his tone, which seems paper thin to me. Indeed, I once had a LesPaul and it was the thinnest sounding guitar I've ever had. I don't like Les Pauls, I want thicker than thick.

dood you think les pauls sound thin?!
he's right though he probably just used a stock gibson pickup, and probably straight into a marshall

Yes. The neck position on a Les Paul is killer with warm fat sustain and such (I like it!), but the bridge position just sounds paper thin to me, very clanky and bright. Remember that I like VERY thick tones and that, to me, the Invader is still too clear and not thick enough. I need thicker than thick (read : andy timmons' tone)

Yeah, his pickups back in the 70's to early 80's were mostly what came stock. These days, and at least the last 10-15 years, he's been using the DiMarzio Norton. He current tone is massive, IMO.

You had a Les Paul and it sounded thin? I find that hard to believe. Les Paul's are very thick sounding instruments.

i bet marshall abuser had a bum piece of wood for a paul. most any les paul i've tried can get very thick and 'muddy', just like you like it

If you're referring to the black Les Paul with the Floyd, it was a late 70's Les Paul Pro, with a stock p-90 in the front and a Duncan 59 retrofitted in the back (LP Pro models came with 2 P90s), according to magazine interviews I remember reading back in the day.

I assure you. I've tried many Les Pauls (other than the one I had) and all of them were clanky and very stiff sounding/feeling on the bridge pickup, but very creamy on the neck pickup.

I must say, however, that I don't like mahogany much, it's probably my least favorite wood.

Actually, he was using a DiMarzio X2N in his black LP.

BTW, Neal's a huge influence on my playing and this guitar is my favorite of his.

Cool clip! I forget about all the other stuff he has done. HSAS , hardline.. I only think Journey and santana..

He is a pretty good singer too.. I love this axe. That is one signature Gibson Id like to have.. Floyd and sustainer would rock!! Ive played the gibby model with a floyd and I like the neck joint access.. To me, it doesnt look good in a sunburst with a floyd.. cherryburst is too classic looking, vs floyd is modern.. Give me black and oh yeah!!

I don't think it matters what guitar or pickups he plays with. That dude just seems to always have a really good tone.....at least to me.
