Anyone using a Jerry Donahue bridge pickup in a tele for rock to hard rock?
I have an american standard tele and want to upgrade the bridge for more versatility.
The belief is that with a tele, you can EQ your distortion for the bridge pickup at the amp or with pedals. That is you can coax a pretty good rock sound out of any tele bridge pickup with the right knob twisting. As proof, at low to medium volume, I can use my bb preamp pedal which has excellent voicing and tone control (separate bass and treble) and get a pretty good earlier zz top sound going. Although it not as much body or thickness... it's focused and not that bad. But..... I would like to better... but still maintain a good clean sound....
My thinking is that a JD pickup should help out more in the dirt area with thicker mids and a tapered treble. But also can provide very decent cleans. Plus it seems the JD gets very high praise.
Am I dreaming or is this workable?
Are there other better contenders for the bridge? I have been avoiding the jb jr or lil 59 as they don't seem to work very well when clean in a tele.
