I think (pretty sure) it is a custom of what he uses/is into now. I do not think it is a recreation of an earlier pickup or sound since he used a JB stock.

Yes, he really used a stock JB in RATT and still does in some guitars. That's no big secret. You want Warren's sound? Use a JB and a cranked up Marshall with ample amounts of delay and Celestion greenbacks. Or, go for a Soldano SLO since he used those a lot in RATT as well.

Look, there's more to a guy's sound than the pickup. There's all the rest of the gear that needs to be taken in to account and even then, you won't sound like him. Ask Ted Nugent. He plugged in to Eddie's rig and guess what, he didn't sound like Eddie.

Find your sound and work with it.

What I wanna know is how the Custom shop differs from a standard JB??

I had the honor once of plugging into Eddies rig, and would you believe, I sounded like Ted Nugent?? haha

It has an A2 mag where the standard JB has an A5 mag. It also has a little bit more wire on it, just a slightly overwound JB from what I can tell.

A Screamin Demon also is a good choice for that tone, if I'm reading you right. Remember that DeMartini was a big fan of Lynch.

is the custom shop DeMartini pickup supposed to capture his early RATT tones? If it was, then why did he need a custom shop model if he just used a stock JB back in the day?

I heard Warren stayed over at George's and helped him figure out some Ozzy songs back before Jake E...I love my Screamin demon...but IMHO it sounds more like the 80's tone through a solid state amp. With my tube amp it is quite "harmonically rich" to me.

I enjoy this area for the pickup chatter and I'm interested in swapping magnets and creating hybrid pickups...but there is a lot more to creating a sound than a pickup. I can tell a difference in my tone simply by changing the thickness of my Dunlop tortex picks (ha-ha). I bought the SD because of marketing hype...the "harmonic content" sold me...and I love it. It has a weakness in the low end that will, hopefully, be rectified by the a8 magnet.

Which reminds me...I gotta go to my music store and buy up all their used Duncans for future diabolical experiments!

JB with A2 mag in your Baretta, played through an a hot-rodded Marshall

no need to sweat the details over a few extra wraps on the coils. the amp is way way way more important.

what would the over all difference be in the JB with an A2 mag v.s. and A5 mag?

I use an A2 JB in a mahogany strat. compared to the A5: midrange is strong and harmonics are rich but there is no upper mid "spike." the lowest bass frequencies are attenuated (reduced) so it doesn't have the "loose" bass anymore. it's still a hot pickup for sure that has the famous JB midrange but the peaks in the EQ curve are smoothed out.

So, it sounds nothing like a JB!

True! (at least in my experience). I believe the SDeco (another custom shop pickup) is exactly a JB with an A2 magnet. No overwinding or anything. I think the JB2 sounded good, but not as good as a Custom Custom (another high wind A2 humbucker).

I use a JB A2 and does RATT perfectly. I believe thats what he use's I think I read it here. The A2 tightens up the JB which gives it that Ratt pedal tone sound.. the Mids are in ur face and leads are even sweeter, and pinch harmonics have that sweetness like Warren's.

I mentioned it before and will do so again for your benefit as I have something very close to his tone.

You need to run a Parametric EQ in front of the amp or in the loop to boost the mid range frequencies. The Furman EQ was the hidden secret of these guys including Ratt, Stryper, Dime and EVH used a 10 band EQ somewhere.

Or on the amp EQ you can try turning the Treble to 0, Mid to 10, and Bass to 3. Presence all the way up, and Gain about 5-6. Then fiddle with your delay.
The metal pick gets you the attack....I play the In Trouble, In Your Direction, and Your In Love Solos all day long with these settings.

For EVH....same EQ just turn Treble, Mid, and Bass all the way up on the amp eq.

OH and most important...he used a JB in an Alder guitar which is way different then a Maple Baretta. JB is not recommended for a bright maple bodied guitar.

um . . . strong upper mids, lots of overall midrange detail and harmonics, plenty of treble and cut is still there. the mids and harmonics are what define the JB and they aren't lost with the A2 swap.

still very unique and very JB - sounds nothing like a Custom series or anything else in the Duncan line. so right back at ya buddy!

Interesting. You are the first person i have ever heard say an A2 magnet tightens up a tone.

The JB is pretty tight in the low end to begin with. When I made a Bug-Sey bucker the low end was spongy not tight. The mids leveled out and some of the highs got softer.
