Default PG split in HSS. Any thougts?

I was planning getting a PG trembucker for the bridge of my HSS and just wiring it as a straight humbucker.

Now I think I will probably get another switch in order to split it but would like to stick with the PG all the same if the split sounds are ok.

Any comments on the split sounds? I don´t expect anything amazing split but if it is really bad I may reconsider pup choice.

Why not a PATB-3? I like its split tone way more than the one from a PGb.

I was hoping not to have to replace the two single coils, at least not right now and they are only about 6K ohms and I reckon there would a big increase in the level when switching from the neck or middle to the bridge.

Anyone else want to comment on the Pearly Gates or reckon that there wouldn´t be a big jump in volume swithching btwn a 6K single and a 9.8K (specs) PATB3?

My personal opinion is that even though the PG is an over-wound pickup, it's still in a "vintage class". You need a higher-output pickup to have a decent effect when split. What you might try is the series/parallel option. Instead of actually splitting the pickup, have the option ton run it in parallel mode. This with give you a brighter, cleaner tone with just a little less output. Also, in parallel mode, you still get the hum-canceling feature.

you'd have a much nicer split sound from at least a 43awg wind and up imo, unless you do what i did and stick an a8 in that 'gates. i've got some tasty strat and tele twang tones out of my pg8 depending on which coil i split to.

I don´t like the PG at all split... too weak and too bright IMO. Parallel wiring would probably sound better, but I don´t think you can get that automatically using a standard 5 way like you can a split... But you mentioned a separate switch being in the works anyway, so....

I put a set of Pearly Gates in a Schecter C-1 and did a coil split on it and it sounded thin and like crap... I've got a Big Apple Strat with a 59 in the neck and PG in the bridge...Both splits(stock from factory), the neck and the bridge sound great !
Go figure... Must be the pots or caps... I've split coiled several other guitars, the Big Apple is the only one I've had that sounds decent.... So, I say it can
be done, but I think the pots and caps are the key.

    Cheers for the input everyone.

I´ve never tried series/parallel switching...sounds like it might be worth sticking with the PG option and running with the switch that way instead of split.

Try the PG with a spin-a-split. I know no-one wants to give up a pot, especially in a Strat-style guitar, but you could put a trim-pot inside the control cavity, tweak it to the sweet spot and wire it to a push/pull or other switch. Call it the "Trim-A-Split".
