A good friend of mine was in Mexico visiting her boyfriend, she's now quarantined because of the outbreak, and this right during her exam week. She'll take the exams from quarantine... no fun. She's ok though but that's the way they do it, to prevent further outbreaks. With things like this I guess it only takes one person to go through. Though I honestly can't say I'm either scared or worried about it, just about my friend.

Wow dude, never expected anybody on here to know someone affected. Hopefully everything goes well and she recovers fast.

Aye, I hope so. She'll be fine on the exam front at least, I don't know anyone more serious about uni :P I was kinda really hoping to see her though, I haven't in three weeks and she's a good friend.

Did you even READ what I posted before calling me or the idea stupid? It seems to me that for a guy who claims to be open minded you are very seldom what you claim if an idea doesn't fit your worldview.

Sure people travel but the article says pigs from those continents. How often are pigs shipped? I honestly don't know, but I wonder what are the chances that the same handful of people acted as incubators for swine flu on several continents.

Are you going to deny the use of biological weapons in Gulf War I?

Could it be coincidence? Sure, and I hope it is! The thing is the guys behind the mahogany doors can't be trusted. I find it awful convenient it is a super strand and it breaks out in a populous conutry that isn't a leading nation.

Probably not, as such behavior is counterproductiive to effective trolling.

On the other hand if "they" really were testing something like that, they probably wouldn`t be stupid enough do it on their own front porch...

Deep in rural china would be a much more likely place if you have to fabricate a coverup anyway, mostly because you would be able to follow the natural development f the virus more closely and also have a much larger sample size.

Latest updates I've seen on the news is the of the 20 confirmed cases in the U.S., only one was hospitalized but is recovering nicely. The others are recovering on their own at home and doing well.

According to the doctors in Mexico, the people that died from it did so because they waited too long to get medical attention for it and pneumonia set in. That can happen with the typical flu we see every year.

These things often remind me of the work done on the Y2k Problem. There were books written about how society was going to fall apart after December 31, 1999 because so many computers were programmed with 2-digit dates. Some people think it was hogwash, because nothing happened. But they weren't the ones going around, updating BIOSes and software. Yeah, it could have been a problem (not that it would have destroyed society, but I could see planes dropping out of the sky) but it wasn't because it was taken care of.

Dude, nature comes up with so many dangerous things, it would be really difficult to know if the next obliterating disease was a weaponized version of an existing germ, or just mother nature saying "gotcha."

Yeah, it reminds of that guy from a few years back who had a bad flu, and the CDC thought he might have a new form of Tuberculosis. So they told him not to go anywhere. But the guy had an invite to a wedding, so he flew from the east coast of the US to Spain, traveling through god knows how many international airports. It turned out he didn't have tuberculosis, but he's still a jerk for flying while he's sick.

It really gets me how politicians will jump on so many little things, which are supposedly threatening our "moral fiber" but they don't say jack about real stuff like this.

Actually, isn't that how how AIDS works? Of course, AIDS isn't spread by shaking hands.

Well, from what I understand, it's not spread by meat consumption. You can still get e coli, though

I don't see what the gulf war has to do with it. Biological weapons have been around for a long time. They were used to wipe out American Indians. They were used in the middle ages to clear out castles and forts.

    What mahogany doors?

As population increases, disease travels more easily. Cities that are more poor are also more dirty and don't have as great sewage systems or drinking water. So it makes perfect sense for such cities to be more vulnerable to disease.

    Disregarding GJ's hilarious find,

Here's some swine flu propaganda from 1976:

Not exactly. AIDS infects the T cells in your body, so your body isn't able to put up any kind of defense. This flu causes your immune system to respond too strongly, meaning your immune system becomes the enemy.
