XKCD has a great comic about this:

"Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised."

There's no need for alarm. Just don't breathe or touch anything until this all blows over.

its purely because we have better access to hospitals and medical treatment in general here in the US. The majority of people have health care and will use it. Also, we tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac nation, so people go to the doctors much more frequently. While that costs taxpayers a ton of money for nothing about 90% of the time...it does save lives in situations like this.

And if you do and you do get swine flu, expect the same symptoms you would get with any other flu.

I am shaking my head in disgust with all of this fear mongering going on in the news.

One doctor on the radio offered this explanation: Maybe the swine flu of the past is similar enough to current strains, and consequently the folks in the US have partial immunity.

Its possible but i think they would know that by now. Places like CDC have samples and get these things fully sequenced really quickly. Of course, that is presuming that have sequenced samples of the previous one.

Actually, he stated that within 5 days or so we should know.

I have no clue, personally. More clearly stated,

    "I post here."

Unfortunately, my sister has flu like symptoms. she went to the doctor today, and guess what she might have...Swine Flu. They are running test on her. Along with her Degenerating Disk Disease, the doctor says it doesn't look good.

Thats horrible to hear but take solace in the fact that no one in the US has died yet and as long as they catch it early and get proper treatment, no one will.

Thats what the doctor said, so I'm not so worried, but the pain she is in is a downer on my end. But the good news is, I get to spend more time with my nephew, teach him some more music.

A virologist offered another possible explanation -- that the genetic code of the virus is slightly different in Mexico from that in the US. They don't know yet.

Again, its possible. But the chances of the virus mutating to a less virulent strain as soon as it entered the US is slim.

I have no knowledge in the field, but I had to take notice of what the virologist said. Slim chances of course, but the virus has been pretty spectacular so far after all -- having assembled elements from the swine, bird and human flu..

Im a biochemist working on my PhD specializing in immunology. The common sense explanation is almost always how quickly people seek medical help in cases like this. The massive availability of health care in the US obviously makes this much easier. Occam's razor.
