    Default Would this work?

I restored a Telecaster a while back, rescued a Squier and re-finished it:

I now use it in a band, and it sounds pretty **** good, EXCEPT the bridge pickup is prone to microphonic feedback (I'd like to get musical feedback!). I'd rather not work about potting it, I'd rather buy a quality pickup.

I love the clear sound of the stock pickup: how notes ring defined and clear.

So I was thinking that the Vintage '54 Lead Pickup for Tele STL-1, would be much the same.

The band I am in play classic 70s rock covers. Sufragette City by Bowie, some Kiss songs, CCR, UFO (Doctor Doctor and Shoot Shoot), actually pretty heavy stuff.

Would the '54 cut it, or would it be TOO low output?

Am I allowed to ask opinions about Tonerider of GFS pickups for Tele too? I know they are a step below SD, but I don't have long before another gig and want the axe ready...!

If you're playing harder rock and 70's classic rock an STL-2 Hot might be a better route to go.
You can run over a Tele with a pickup truck, pick it up - and it'll still play out of tune

Thanks playas, a bunch of people have said they like it, so I am going to try and do another.

Here is what it looked like before:

Some guy had chiseled the old paint off and repainted using interior household paint.

It took a long long time to restore, in all about a year.

mrturtle, I will check the samples and specs from the STL-2. Thanks for that.

I second the STL-2, but with the tap option. Get a push pull pot or a 5 way switch and get the best of both world: a bright, clear, stringy tone and a thicker, beefier tone for heavier things.

Cool job, you need the correct black Telecaster switch knob.
If thats a Squier you have metric dimensions and its hard to fit the SD into the stock Squier bridge plate, but it works.

Yes, is a Squier. I have since changed the knob to a proper Tele one.

What would I have to do to make the pickup fit? Would there be mechanical intervention needed, i.e. filing/drilling, smashing/grinding/welding involved...?

Most likely you'd just have to go around the pickup cavity with a grinding wheel to open it up a touch.

Don't have powertools....I guess I'll have to maybe get a whol new bridge assembly too....if I shoot for Duncans.

the tapped hot is a good versitle option for ya

not sure why you would have to modify the guitar unless the pup thats in it isnt a standard size

Thanks Mr. Jeremy. I measured the bridge single coil that's in there right now, it came about about 7.4k.

The tapped hot sounds good right now.

FWIW, both of my Japanese tele's have been able to mount standard sized Fender and Duncan tele lead pickups.
