    Default Tone opinions

    Song page: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7568439

This is about as heavy as my band gets as far as gain and tone for the guitar......I am using a tapped SSL-6 because I love the tone and the options with the tap and the way it behaves with middle and neck pup.

My question is ....Is the tone on this song fat and aggressive enough, or should I contemplate a humbucker?

Please, if you have an opinion. good or bad, give it.....I am looking for honest opinions and not a pat on the back.

It is hard to be subjective when it is yourself.

    Thanks.

Personally, I think it sounds mighty fine the way it is. Just depends on how much more fat and thick you want it to be.

I think the leads sound great. I think having it LESS razor sharp is definitely going to make it stand out more. My .02

holy crap, that's cool. it really bridges the gap between the kinks and van halen, tonewise and overall vibe imo. keep it that way

i'd definitely leave it as is, especially if that's as heavy as you want to go anyway. it didn't sound like you were having any trouble busting those harmonics either
the pick slides, sliding off the chords and your picking benefit from the use of the single IMHO, it adds a lot of personality

Your tone is living proof that you don't need a super high gain humbucker to get pinch harmonics. There should be a link to this song on the main page so no one else has to ask!

Personally, I would prefer a humbucker, but that's the metal fan in me. Your tone certainly sounds good, and like SRS said, it bridges a gap between the Kinks and VH.

I LOVE how someone laughs during the drum breakdown, exactly like Dave Lee Roth!

I'm totally digging the tone you've pulled together for this.
Who'da thunk you could go that brown without a HB?

You've stumbled upon some magic here, go ahead and believe your own ears.

My signal path for that tune was Strat > M.I. Audio Crunch Box > Mesa Boogie Blue Angel....the Crunch Box's gain was at about 10'clock...I might have goosed the single note lines with a Dannelectro Transparent OD.....I can't remember for sure.

The Boogie was running both the el-84's and 6v6's.

Agreed- nice bridge between Kinks and VH1- Kind of a more aggressive and less chimey VOX tone there.

If you need a bit more "power" BB, why not a Duncan Pup booster in resonance 2?

It would work, but I sworn off any more boosts or OD's....I think I will leave well enough alone.

I guess I'll have to be in the minority and say it needs a 'bucker.

I'm not 100% sure why I say that though. Maybe it's just the iconic nature of the song and the way you're playing it that makes me expect to hear a 'bucker.

It's not a bad sound you're getting, I just can't help but think it Sounds like a Strat that's at the very edge of its fattitude. A 'bucker may allow it to breathe a little more and not max itself out as much and allow a little more character to come through? Maybe? I dunno. Just my 2 pesos.

I wanted all opinions and I appreciate yours. I was hoping for a lot of responses, so I could get some insight.

I really don't want to lose the sound of the bridge and middle pup together...I am going to keep what I have and let the heavier tones suffer a bit since I don't use them as much.

It's a bit thin for the brown sound and has a bit more spiky gain to it. I might stick with the singles and just kick in an EQ before playing this one, set to take some of the high mid out and fatten the low mid.

Still a good tone, and your playing is great, but I would like to hear the fattness more.

    Harmonies are pretty good, too!

Then I think the only thing left to do is buy another guitar to add to your arsenal.

dig it. would like to hear more distortion on the bass though to back ya up a bit, but maybe he don't like distortion on his bass. production reminds me of REO's riding the storm out album.
