    Default more pricing talk

I know all about the dramatic price hikes for major guitar manufacturers, but it brings up an interesting question. How is this effecting the "newly used" guitar market on ebay, craigslist, etc.

For example I bought a Fender Classic Player 60's Strat that retailed for 800 US before the price hike. I bought it "barely used" on ebay for 620 before shipping. It's now selling for 1100 retail. Mind you this is a MIM strat (albeit "custom shop designed"). The big question is whether a 2008/2009 which retailed for over a grand sell used for more than a pre-price-hike guitar of similar condition??

It almost makes me wonder if people were buying up Fenders right before the price hike and selling them for profit as mint guitars on ebay once the price hike set in. Of course people BS all the time about the retail price of the guitar (usually by mentioning the list price as the retail price).

Warmoth jacked up prices for some of the fancier necks. Full Rosewood Tele necks used to be $272 in the showcase, now they are closer to $400.

Time for the economy crisis to end, otherwise I can afford guitars anymore.

I don´t think this would work, simply becasue 1. the product is barely changed if at all, and 2. the price difference is less thatn the hit you take in value with the guitar being used anyway. You´ll almost definitely still be selling at a loss...

A great way to subsidize guitarists, but not a good way to earn money at all

yeah, it'll take awhile for the used market to adjust the price. I remember when I sold my SG '61 reissue in 2007. 6 months prior, the new guitar price had worked it's way up from $1500 to $2000. I still only got $1200 even though it was easily a 9.5/10. I should also note that I was working for Guitar Center at the time and the store cost for the guitar went up less than $100. Nice profit margin . . .

yea I'm sure people who work at guitar center could pull that off with maybe 1 or 2 guitars though.. say they manage to get that $800 guitar for $600 or whatever outrageous deal they give employees right before the price hike... then when the price hike sets in he can say he JUST bought the guitar for 1100 retail and possibly sell it for 800?.. but then again that doesn't make sense because no one would buy a guitar that's exactly the same but one year newer for $200 more

what this all comes down to is that people that want to buy a new guitar will get raped since their 2009 used will sell for almost the same amount as the same guitar from 2008.. I don't buy new guitars unless I'm at a store and *bond* with one.. but there is a new guitar that came out from Gretsch (G6118T JR) that just went on the market.. if it would've come out before the price hike the used price woulda been much sweeter!
