Heavy PAF in Les Paul
Hello folks!
Asked SD for a heavy PAF to go with my Les Paul and they suggested the SH-5 Custom, i´m not sure i´d hoped for a moore "true PAF" but does anyone of you have the SH-5 perhaps in your Les Paul?
I would really like to hear how it sounds, so despcritions and sound samples youtube videos, all are welcome

the general consensus is that the SH-5 in a les paul rules; i believe KMD referred to it as "the voice of satan" at one stage hehe
i've tried it and certainly it does work in an LP, but i needed to drop it a little and raise the poles to be happy with it; i really like bright tones though, and am not the biggest fan of the custom wind. i'm one of the weirdos who likes a JB in an LP though.

Duncan tone wizards are very quick to recommend hot pickups, and I will tell you this, you can NOT get a good PAF tone with a ceramic magnet, just ain't possible.
And depending on how "heavy" you want to go I would suggest a good ol' 59 bridge, raise the hight a bit, and it will sound as heavy as you need it to....
Output does not equal tone...

true true, i was just amazed by the suggestion of a SH-5 when i wanted a PAF but heavy...
I Prefer Alnico 5 for bridge and alnico 2 for neck...
And AWG42 wire is what i like to

Les Paul + Custom sounds awesome. Like a "heavy" PAF. The Custom is more like Medium output, and has a similar vibe to a PAF but turned up to 11. Backing it down a notch, the C5 will give you the Alnico feel, then back another few notches the Brobucker and Screamin Demon offer variations on the slightly pumped up PAF type tones. Not to mention the S-Deco which I've never played.

I didn't like the custom in my LP - too compressed. Didn't like the clean tone. I felt like the highs were kind of blah and the lows were dead. Swapped in an A5 and the guitar came alive. I ended up with a '59/Custom hybrid with an A5 magnet. It works the best in my guitar.

The Duncan Custom is the VOICE OF SATAN IN A LES PAUL!!
If you're looking for the clarity and articulation of an Alnico 2 pro or a Seth Lover, it really isn't there though (of course you could try splitting it for cleans). It's got a PAF-like midrange that sounds great when it drives an amp into distortion. Very meaty and raw.
I usually tell people that the only way to find out how a pickup feels is to play it too. On the artist page you might find some players who use the Custom, and that might give you an idea of the sound.

Not sure, but if you're into swapping mags, I can think of worse ways to spend a little time...
