Smooth Les Paul neck pickup (not 59)?

agree. I use 59's in several guitars. I had one that i needed alittle less boomy and trebly, so i put an alnico 4 magnet in it and is sounds great! Most of the same feel as im used to, and it just sings!

Put an Alnico 2 magnet in your 59n and see if that doesn't do the trick for you.

I'm using a '78n and it's better (for me) than any other neck pickup I've tried.
