Paul McCartney at Citifield
So, I went to the concert at CitiField last night, and I'm thoroughly convinced that I just saw the greatest concert I will ever see in my entire life. Just a few years shy of 70, and he played for two hours straight, left for two minutes, and came back for a three song encore. Left again, and came back five minutes after for another four songs! How he does it I don't know, I can only hope I have that kind of energy at his age.
His voice is still absolutely phenomenal. Went through Beatles stuff, Wings stuff, later solo stuff. Only one from his last album (thats alright, wasn't too great an album, IMO), which was actually pretty good, stuff from Flaming Pie, stuff from Band on the Run, and some others. It's amazing how he seamlessly switches from bass to guitar to keys and back again. He used the Violin bass whenever he played bass, and had two different Les Pauls that he used. One was a multi-colored one that he used for Let Me Roll It into an instrumental Foxy Lady jam, and the other was a really nice sunburst Les Paul that he used otherwise. He's certainly no slouch at the electric, he did a bunch of guitar solos, and they were all very good! For acoustics, he had all the Epiphones, and even brought out his really old one for Yesterday.
His band is ridiculous. Rusty Anderson is a fantastic guitar player, and those Divided by 13 amps he plays sure sound fine! Played a few different ES-335s and Les Paul's the whole night. Brian Ray, the other guitarist, also had Divided by 13s, and played a black Les Paul, an SG, some acoustics (mostly 12 strings), and a natural colored Gretsch. He used an EB-3 for when he played bass. The keyboard player also played harmonica, accordion, guitar, and bass. And his drummer is a powerhouse, and sings on every song! They all sang, the harmonies were some of the tightest I've ever heard. Great stuff!
A few highlights of the night were definitely Something, started off on ukelele, A Day in the Life that segues into Give Peace a Chance, Live and Let Die which had the most ridiculous fireworks I've ever seen. There had been no pyrotechnics or anything, until it hit this song, and these huge spouts of flame erupted from the stage, and enough fireworks to blow up the stadium flew out of the stage. There was enough smoke left over that you couldn't see the Citifield sign behind the stage for awhile. Hey Jude was the closer (before the encores) and was absolutely amazing. Then he came back to do Day Tripper, Lady Madonna, I Saw Her Standing There, Yesterday, Helter Skelter, Get Back, and Sgt. Peppers (Reprise)/The End. He kept pretending he would walk off stage, but just kept coming back to play more! Absolutely incredible.
Another cool thing was, according to the screens at the beginning, that concert was filmed for DVD release, so I just find that awesome that I saw the one that'll be on DVD. Overall, an amazing concert, and like I said earlier, probably one of the best ones I'll ever see in my life. Did anyone else go to any of the concerts?
