Default Help with Ibanez V1 pickup (new problem)

a new problem arose. i enlarged the hole in the mounting rings...now this....

this is frustrating. the holes in the baseplate where you put the mounting screws on the pickup have been stripped. the screws go in for a certain length, then do not continue to go in the hole. how can i remedy this?

I don't know Ibanez pickups, but could it be that its metric length and you're using USA spaced screws? Or are you using the stock screws? Then I have no clue.

Rethread the hole with a tap and die set then go to a hardware store and find the next step up in screw size.

Yeah, you know, that tap and die set every guitarist carries, even if they have never worked on a guitar.

Seriously, it's good advice, but who actually has one of those when they're just starting out? Especially an 18 year old. I'm 40 and don't have a tap and die set

If the holes had been stripped, you wouldn't get the screw to lock into it. If it's crossthreaded, then the screw will go in maybe one turn and then stop dead. It sounds instead like you've got the wrong screw (as Tom said - Standard screw going into a Metric hole).

I'm assuming this V1 pickup was purchased used and didn't include the screws?

Ok, then just go up one screw size and let the larger screw cut a new thread. Do it right once or wrong a dozen times.

V series are made by DiMarzio, so that is the screw size. However, now that it is stripped, you just need a slightly larger screw.

You can buy a larger screw with a nut, and superglue the nut to the tab in a pinch.

it came with larger screws, but the holes were kinda stripped. the stock screws are thinner than the one that came with the V1.

i emailed Dimarzio and they said i have to replace the the whole baseplate!

i think i might try that nut thing superglued onto the pickup. thanks.

The V Series are NOT made by Dimarzio. They are asian made, and they have a different, larger screw (with finer threads) You do not have to replace the baseplate. I've remedied this a lot of different ways. One is to get solder in there, and re-tap. You can also go up a size. You can drill it out and solder nuts to the baseplate to accept the screws. You can drill it out and use tinnerman nuts. You can just go to the larger screw and file a groove in the bottom of it so it cuts its own threads easier. One guy says he taps the bottom with a hammer, and it curls the metal inward and gives him new material to thread. In the case of the V series, if you did that you'd use the smaller traditional screw size.

the V1 that i have is made in japan. yes, the screws are indeed larger than the usual 3-48 screws and has finer threads. thanks frank for the very informative help. right now, i just did the hammering thing. it worked out okay. if something else happens, i'd do the nut thing.

Was it not Larry himself who said the IBZ and V series were DiMarzio designs and the V series were produced off shore?

Regardless, any off the above will solve his problem.
