would a person have to have had their top ten match the compiled top ten in identical order to get 100% compatibility ?

Veddy interesting. Two of my picks were in the top five, and all my picks but two were in the top 100. I was surprised to see Lateralus ranked higher than Aenema, and surprised Satriani's Crystal Planet made it on there as opposed to Surfing or Flying.




I guess I was slightly more compatible than I thought. My top 4 are on the list and 5 overall. Granted, 3 are #65 or lower and only one in the top 20, but still there.
I was also responsible for one of the 91 bottom albums.


Only one Rush album and it's All The Worlds A Stage? Are you people on dope?!?!?!
One of Moving Pictures, 2112, and Hemipsheres should be there instead at the minimum!



JohnX2, would you post your list? I am trying to figure out what kind of music taste you have, but that's a huge mystery!



For me, the surprises in the list were:
1) The Cult, Electric
2) Pixies, Surfer Rosa
3) The number of Tool albums listed. Really?
4) The Rush & Joe Satriani albums that won over what I'd believe to be more popular offerings from them.
Other than that I think the list is mostly predictable and a little disappointing. It's really not that different from your average radio station top 100 list where "Stairway to Heaven" inevitably gets the top slot. I don't know why I expected more rare gems when my list alone was pretty predictable for the most part. Like I said, I think the albums that made the bottom of the list might offer a few more rare titles.

For each person, I compare their individual albums' ranks with their ranks in the overall list. For each album in that person's top 10 list, I take the difference between the album's individual rank and that album's overall rank, and subtract that difference from 100. For example, let's say someone ranked an album #7 in their individual list, but that album is ranked #63 in the overall list. The difference between the individual and overall rankings is 56, so that person's compatibility score for that album is 44. As another example, that same person's #2 album is #2 on the overall top 100 list as well. In this case, there's no difference between the two rankings, so that person's compatibility score for that album is 100 (the maximum possible for one album). If someone ranks an album in their top 10 list that doesn't appear in the overall top 100 list, the compatibility score for that album is 0.
I do this for each of the ten albums in a person's individual list, add those scores together, and divide the total by 1,000 (the maximum possible combined compatibility score) to come up with that person's compatibility rating, displayed as a percentage.

Due to the number of requests, maybe you should just post a table of everyone's compatibility rank, Keith.
You know what else would be a fun feature? The ability to find your forum music match based on the data, i.e. a list of 5 people whose tastes most closely match yours.
If I could have a peek at the data, I'd be able to whack together an algorithm that did exactly that.
