neck, quite often laminated with something like Tasmanian myrtle, purple heart, american maple, english sycamore, or silky oak.
I then put an ebony board on top of that. that gives the spank of the ebony but moderates it with the neck timbers. Very precise almost staccato, if played quickly, yet with a clear sustain when you dwell on the frets.
