    Default Black Korina wood anyone?

Awaiting the arrival of my Warvin guitar (Warmoth body/Carvin neck) from ebay which has a beautiful grained Black Korina body as was wondering if anyone likes Black Korina or Korina in general. I know Gibson used this wood back in the day or maybe they still do but supposedly from what i`ve heard Korina has a similar tone to Mahogany but with more mids. The Black Korina sure is nice looking though!

I have an unfinished but playable Black Korina Tele from Warmoth.

Sounds good, cannot really put it into perspective with other woods since I also have ebony board and the like. But it's certainly a wood I will look for in the future.

Looks great... Haven't had a chance to play guitars made of that particular wood though.

I originally planned for Tru Oil after black filling. Never went to finish it because I thought it might not be good enough and ... oh shiny.

That is my friend's old guitar, the builder, and I bet it will play great. Faust dont mess! I bought a '79 Dean Z from him that was excellant out of the case. If you bought that from the cat that built it, He packs them WELL!!! for shipping. If not from him it should still be a solid guitar.
Aint no pro but I know what I like....

    Standard thread interjection:

Black Limba is a wood. White Limba is a wood.

Korina is a finish, like Wine Red or Sunburst.

    Huh?

    No. It's NOT a finish.

Korina is another name for Limba... one that was given to it by Gibson for the original V's & Explorers.

There are two types... white & black and other then color there's no difference between them. The color is determined by what part of the tree it comes from. The black runs are mineral streaks.

Tonally its very similar to mahogany but with a hair more snap, like swamp ash. It tends to be about the same weight as an identically cut piece of mahogany but not always... sometimes it can be heavier. Used to be lighter on average but I think that wood is gone...

I'm debating limba vs. mahogany for my next project...

It turns out that Korina is a finish. The wood is called Limba.

The story goes is that Gibson named the yellowish hue of the first Explorers and Flying Vs from the 1950s Korina, to give it an exotic name. They might have even hinted that Korina was the name of the wood. But truth be told, the wood is called Limba.

Not to nitpick, but the names Limba & Korina are used interchangeably...

    http://www.christophertonewood.com/s...ORINA-1/Detail

To get even more specific the name of the tree is 'terminalia superba' and the wood is also sometimes called idigbo. All the same stuff...

If korina is a finish then I would very much like for somebody to explain to me the existance of PRS's Korina series of guitars which are made of black limba and come in lots of different colors.

That said, a korina / limba / superba (that's what i would call it) guitar will sound about 30 times better than a similar guitar built from any other tone wood. Holy crap it is incredible.

Seriously, J Moose, thanks for the 'terminalia superba' blurb...i can't wait to have my neck-thru SG built out of a nice piece of black superba wood

I dunno about that whole 30 times better thing... its certainly cool... but like everything else it depends on what 'ya want. Limba/Korina is basically a snappier mahogany. Little less low-mid... little more upper mid & sparkle.

The build I'm going to do is basically a Firebird in 'Fender' clothes... but one of my favorite "odd" Fenders. So mini-buckers which are already sorta bright... with a bolt-on maple neck and its also gonna have a 6-point trem set for dive only. So all that stuff makes it brighter then a stock Firechicken, and while I've always wanted a korina guitar I'm just not entirely sure that this should be it.

    Maybe...

Ideally I'd be able to swap this one with my Lester & not have it be worlds different...

Dude you want that guitar to be korina.

It won't be world's different. It'll be just different enough.

Nice to see some Korina/Limba fans in here! The reason why i had to have the one i`m getting is because of the way it looked. I know you shouldn`t go by looks alone but WOW!!!!! Plus,i figured i couldn`t go wrong with a Warmoth body and Carvin neck with a Seymour Duncan P-Rail pup, ect...!

Also for the first time i`ll have a guitar with a 1 piece body!!!!

It should ring like a bell...

I've seen some really amazing looking black limba & some pieces that should've been used for firewood too! Even some pieces that have tiny bug holes... crazy stuff. For many years "black" limba was the reject stuff but now its about all you can get unless you find a stash of wood that was cut decades ago.

You gotta report back when you get it!

Yeah, I thought you were getting the above guitar. A good friend out in the Northwest built that.

BTW, LOVE Korina/Limba/African Mahogany. I own several and love the Tone. Go great with Duncan '59s in them.
