    Default Pickup Help

I need some recomendations on a humbucker for my Soloist. I don't use anything but APII Pro's in my LP's but this guitar needs a different tone with alot more distortion. It currently has a JB/C5 Hybrid in it and it sounds pretty good, but I would like something with higher output and more harmonics to jump out.

What are my choices with an Alnico magnet? To me, ceramic mag pickups have a sterile sound compared to Alnico 2 and 5, which just seem to be more organic. I get the best squeels and harmonics out of ceramics, but not the tone I want.

What stock Duncans would you recomend?

actually, i would suggest getting an alnico 8 magnet into that custom/jb hybrid. it's already a pretty good high-output style pickup and with the uneven coils produces some nice harmonic content, and an a8 would boost the output and mids enough to get you the type of tone i think you're lookin' for.

if not though, then get a duncan alt.8

How would a Distortion sound with the mag changed out to an A5 or A2?

The Custom Custom I just got last week sounds great, you could try one of those.

Maybe you need a DiMarzio. Some of thems have great harmonics and very high output. DOn't rule out other guys. WHen it comes down to it, Seymour's (hopefully) not gonna hold it against you if DiMarzio makes your sound perfect. Although I'll stick to the fine products offered by Seymour Duncan®!(we cool now?)

I've tried some Dmz's and I just didn't care for any of the ones I tried. They all seem to have a "flavor" about them.

how were you measuring the output on those dude..?

i've tried a couple different JB/custom hybrids and a FS in the same gui and the FS sounds a lot more focused. my guess is that this is because a FS is basically a C5 with 2 rows of hex poles, so it's a brighter and tighter C5.
i thought the custom/JB hybrids sounded great, but because those 2 coils are very different it either sounded like the fattest PAF ever with the JB coil closest the neck, or a chewier JB that had spent some time on a stairmaster with the JB closer the bridge - either way, it still wasn't hitting the amp as hard as either of the donor pickups though.

    Full Shred.

It's what stayed in my Floyd guitar. Only a Kramer Focus but still.
