Thumbs up Robbie Blunt Appreciation Thread

Nobody ever talks about the guy who did the guitar work for much of Robert Plant's early solo stuff. Big shoes to fill, yet he wasn't intimidated and didn't feel he had to cop Page's style.

Enjoy "Ship of Fools," and be sure to check out the first three Plant solo albums. Great tone, great style, Gilmouresque in his taste and economy.

"In the Mood" and "Big Log" have a great spanky strat tone. I like that they have a lot of sustain without distortion.

I don't know who he is, but I can appreciate a good Blunt.

Didn't like his stuff at the time but grew into it. Tough gig stepping into Page's shoes.

As a kid, I gained more interest in single coils, listening to songs like Big Log.

The fact that this thread only has six replies (excluding this one) goes to show how woefully unrecognized Mr. Blunt goes.

Point well taken. Still, the young'uns should be able to appreciate this guy.

Robbie is great, he was a member of a band I loved called Silverhead. Played on their second album called "16 and Savaged". They were sort of a trashy Faces-like band that went for a glam-rock vibe, I swear the Black Crowes are fans becuase there is a lot of similarities in their sound. Michael Des Darres was the lead singer, Nigel Harrison from Blondie was the bass player so they were loaded with talent just not hits.

I recall an interview with Plant right after that came out where he specifically wanted Robbie to play outside of his "comfort zone", so to speak... so not only is he not sounding like standard Page/Zep, but he was apparently pushing his own boundaries.

Answers.com commented "Blunt's playing on the album was very reminiscent of Jimmy Page's, blending blues, Eastern melodies, heavy riffing, and emotive solos into a surprisingly potent mix."

In that he sounded like Page at his most eclectic, I can agree.

All in all, I liked all of his work on Plants solo albums.

If memory serves me correctly it was a partsocaster, dynacomp, Boss CE-1 into a Princeton. Could also be a Boogie.

One of the definitive Strat tones.

I still like those 80's Plant songs. Great songwriting, great guitar tones (especially considering the fact that the trend in rock guitar tones at the time was lots of sustain, buz, crunch and gain) and tasty licks.
