    Default RS Guiratworks

Hi guys, Im looking at wiring kits from SR guitar works. They offer 3 kits Modern. Re-issue and Vintage. Whats are the differences between the kits ?

The kit will be going in a Agile 3100, Mahogany body, Maple top, ebony fret board.

The pick ups will be a 59N and a Custom 5. Im looking for a slightly hotter version of the classic Les Paul/Marshall amp Tone.

    Never seen this make.

Typical Vintage versus Modern differences will be in capacitor values (.047uf versus .022uf), 3-way versus 5-way selector switches for Strats, single conductor + shield cable versus 4-con + shield, cloth versus poly conductor insulation, these sorts of details.

    Adam:

    OK, here are the differences:

    • Modern: Designed to handle more high output pups, let more clarity and oomph come through. These use superpots, and they're designed inhouse. They use more modern materials and there is less regard to vintage accuracy, however the quality is still extremely high
    • Reissue: Open up an original '59 LP or a '57 Strat, look inside, nuff said. Non-Superpots, Luxe caps, cloth-insulated wires, correct wiring style and switching... it's like a '50s wiring config landed in your guitar. You can get these with aging.
    • Vintage: Mix of modern and reissue to give you the best of all worlds. You can get these aged too, and they work best for Vintage pups while giving you the modern advantages of more modern-designed caps and the Superpot (which is a wonderful thing).

Superpots are pots designed by RSGW and made by CTS that are jumps beyond normal CTS pots in terms of quality and taper smoothness. They're a bit pricey, but they're GREAT for volume. DO NOT use superpots for tone, they do funny things in the tone section like cut out... RSGW / CTS also have normal RSGW pots for the tones that also have an even and special taper. The tolerances are 2% for superpots and 10% for normal pots.

    I hope that helps

In short, RS is offering electronic components of a quality that you might wish had been supplied in your guitar from scratch. These components can make a huge difference to how an electric guitar interacts with a valve amplifier.

I use the volume pot of my guitar to control the degree of saturation from my amplifier. The taper needs to be good and turning feel needs to be smooth. This is fundamental to the way that I play electric guitar. I cannot claim to be as retentive about this as, say, Edward Van Halen but I'm not far behind.

My personal favourite pot is the DiMarzio Custom Taper. Its spec is very similar to the components offered by RS. IMO, you can order with confidence.
