C5 (clean) Audio Sample

Is this a fair representation of what the pu sounds like? The reason I ask is that although I've seen quite a few recommendations for the C5, that audio sample sounds absolutely terrible to me.

Not even a little bit, it's really misleading to be honest. I remember I was set on getting a custom 5 based on recommendations and then heard the audio sample and became really hesitant. I eventually took the chance and am happy I did. The custom 5 is a fantastic bridge pick-up for les pauls (particularly with a nickel cover). I would ignore this audio sample!!

Thanks. I was so turned off by the sample that I think I would have to hear one live before taking a chance on one. I figure the CC may meet my need better anyway. I guess you must be braver than me to have gone ahead in spite of the sample.

Well the good thing about the custom line is that if you bought the custom custom and didn't like it you could just swap in an alnico 5 magnet and it would be the custom 5, swap in a ceramic magnet and you've got the duncan custom

No, the C5 samples have obviously been recorded in a different room at least. The recording gear and environment aren't compatible with what was used for the others.

That's why I use a Vox Tonelab to record pickups, directly into a mixer and a soundcard.

I did some searching on Tip & Clips for C5 examples, and feel a lot better about it now. I don't know why they let that sample get posted on the website. Still trying to get the bad taste out of my ears.

+1. And the recently popular C8. Some guys use an A4 too. Very versatile PU. If you like high output bridge PU's, odds are some version the Custom family will make you happy.

I'm so glad to be reading all the posts about mag swapping and especially now about the Custom/Custom 5/ Custom 4/ Custom 8...etc. I just got a couple mags yesterday to start trying in some of my not-so-perfect-yet PUs. The custom really sounds like a very versitile PU. I've got a Custom in the bridge of one of my LPs that I kinda like but not quite. So tonight I'm going to swap in an A8 and see what that does. If that fails I'll put in an A5.

btw, if anyone really loves the sound of the C5 audio sample, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm sure that someone out there is doing Celtic rap for french horn and banjo, and that tone is a perfect fit for the mix.

If that fails I'll put in an A5.

I was buying and selling PU's all the time, trying to get ones that fit my guitars woods just right, and that's often a long, expensive process. Once I started swapping magents, I find that I can make most of my PU's sound great.

For example, I just haven't been able to get along with the ice-picky JB in any of my guitars (tried them in several). But on the advice of some members, I finally tried an A2 in a JB. Wow. That annoying spike is gone, and the mids make it rich & full. Very nice.

I'm already pretty satisfied with what I've got in my LP. I've got a couple potential application for something in the custom family: For my Dot, I would be looking for something to pair with probably a PGn. If I put together an ash tele thinline, I would be looking to pair with a quarter pound. Preferred style is a fairly clean, jazzy blues sound. Think a combination of BB, Wes, & Larry Carlton.
