    Default HELP!!! Lost a partition!!!!!!!

a very important one - the one with all of the music!!!!! Mac based machine, external hard drive.

The hardrive is visible - just not the partition called 'music' It shows up on disk tools, but it wont mount and scans frightenly fast for over 100gig of music?!?!?!?!

Any thoughts? I have this backed up so 98%+ of my music is retrievable. But I want THAT music folder!!!!!!

Go into single user mode and run fsck.

well - iTunes hs found all of my tunes except one I had not backed up from last night.

However - I am hesitant to erase the drive that had the partition hoo-ha and just do over.

If a partition self-destructed is it even possible to revive it?

I ran disk utilities and that doesn't seem to help any...

Ids - awesome link that scares the bejeebers out of me!

If you want to keep the partition and repair any damage fsck is the way to go.

Well, I effed around with fsck. I take it:

BAD SUPERBLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER IS WRONG

means that the partition is toast....time to reformat?

It should suggest alternate superblock locations.

Before you run fsck you should do a sector-wise backup if you have the space somewhere.

Everything I want on there is already backed-up. Whew!

It did in fact ask for an alternate sector. Personally, disk micro-surgery isn't my thing. I'd rather wipe it and do-over. That ok?

You can run fsck with some of the other command line flags like -fy and it might be able to be repaired. You could reformat, but a reformat does not solve an underlying mechanical failure. It would be irresponsible for me to say reformat it and you will be fine. It might last ten years or ten days? So exercise caution.

Well, I'll give it whirl and see what happens...

Try running man fsck from a command prompt and see what other options OSX gives you. http://developer.apple.com/mac/libra...n8/fsck.8.html
