how about a single coil, an actual strat or tele coil (not just one that is similar sound when split), that fits into a humbucker spacing. not just like a phat cat that doesnt sound anything like a p90, but a strat single coil that just has a big, potted gold/nickel cover.

or maybe that same idea but with the addition of a small rail coil, much like the prails, so that the pickup can still be used to get somewhat humbucking sounds. the rail would be higher output than the real single coil and would have a much more modern tone.

Oh, a humbucker-sized Telecaster bridge pickup, big baseplate, slant and all.

    Yeah.

A humbucker that has one stacked coil so when you split it, it's like having a stacked single coil. If thats possible then they should jump on that because that would be infinitely awesome if its possible and sounds good. I'd buy them anyways.

    Ok. Questions:

Sounds like the DF is actually pretty highly regarded.. Are they good and what do they sound like?? Ive never played one.

From one of Zerb's posts, were you saying that Duncan once made a similar pup? If so, what was it?

So, make a tweaked DF, make it with that plastic or dye that has that bad odor and call it stink finger...
Believe me when I say that some of the most amazing music in history was made on equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.

I'd like to see a new version of the Phat Cat pickups.

Maybe an alnico 5 neck Phat Cat with a clearer more articulate tone.

And a hotter version of the alnico 2 bridge Phat Cat that nails the Mississippi Queen tone.

I really like the bridge Phat Cat - it would just be nice to have a hotter version.

The neck Phat Cat I have felt from "get go" was not bright and clear enough for my tastes.

I would like a 59/custom hybrid, with a coil tap on the custom coil.

I would like to see my own design at Duncan's, but I suppose thats too much to wish for.

    Quick summarise:

    Alnico 8 bar
    alnico 5 slugs
AWG43 wire on 1 coil, AWG42 on the other.

sounds strange in specs, but the tone is monstrous. Its got everything I want or need in a 'regular' humbucker. The Qtuner not counting, ofcourse.

    or.... 2 'stacked' singlecoils under 1 humbucker-hood?

I want one bridge pickup that can switch between a low vintage FireBird or Gretsch humbucker output and tone and a more modern hard rock/metal humbucking output. Since the typical argument against a two output tapped coil is that you use two different gauges of wire, each coil could have its primary low output wind with 42AWG to a make an 6-7K ohm pickup, then additional winds of 43 AWG to bring it up to 10-14K total ohms or whatever sounds good. Who says the coil has to all be one gauge. I won't claim to know what the right numbers of turns or ohmage would be for each output, or how the two different gauges in one coil would interact, or how to manufacture it, I'll leave that to Mr Duncan to figure out.

well, thats kinda my pickup. Its got that country spank when I put it parallel, and a great, broad, tight, punchy sound in series. Not to mention ofcourse, the split-tones (left coil is completely different from right, in specs and tone).
