Default Alnico Magnets for a '59

what magnet could make the '59 sound a little more hotter for distortions, but still retaining all that clear crystaline cleans in brings on a les paul? just wondering how I can make it sound a little more aggressive for distorted high gain sounds.

    thanks guys.

You could try an A8 magnet to make it a bit more "aggressive". I personally haven't tried it though. If you amp has tons of gain you really don't need it, IMO.

yep. however, if you don't need more output and/or crazyness but still want slightly more agression, you could try an a4 since it's got a bit more mids and is voiced somewhat similarly to an a8.

    Is that so?

I think I'll order a A4 for my custom or hybrid

Can't think of a magnet that will get you what you are describing, but the Custom 5 pickup comes to mind. Same magnet, hotter wind.

    I'd recommend against an a8 in a 59 B.

Ice pick, big time, even with 250k pots! My LP's a little on the tighter/brighter side acoustically but I couldn't take the a8 59 for more than 2 days.

If you wanna roll your tone control back, the overall character is like a 59 but the bass tightens up real good and it has some sizzle with gain, and way more 'push'. It's an interesting flavour but I couldn't play it clean.

I have a 59/8 in my Alder body strat with one pu and one volume knob. Absolutely Rocks !
No ice pick tones here at all. The top end is roll off/smooth and the guitar really fattends up alot. String pull is strong but you can take care of that by adjusting the individual poles that you need to even out the tones. The sound is very simular to the Ibanez Super 70's pu's.

Looks like you're describing a ceramic magnet in that '59... A8 is creamy smooth, lika an A2 in steroids.

Having no less than four humbuckers with A8 magnets, including a '59b, I'm really having a hard time imagining what you describe.

To me a Ceramic comes to mind. Although it will probably get you what you want judging by your description, it might pull some mids so you might lose some cut in a live situation. Only time I use Ceramics in the neck is when I can afford to lose some mids. Usually because Ceramics tend to "sound" louder it might not be an issue but I'm just giving you a heads up if you go that route.

An A8 to me sounds like a Ceramic's bottom end with an A2's body. The A8 does have a lot of upper mids though so it still has bite to it and cut. I've never used them in the neck. When I use them in the bridge it is to tame a Ceramic bucker. Usually takes away the edge while staying tight. I've heard they are pretty fat sounding in the neck but I've also heard them being bright so I don't know what to say about that.

Just buy a bunch of mags and give them all a shot. They don't cost much more then $5 each I believe. So why not right? Who knows maybe an A4 or something will work. I've used an A4 in the neck before. To me it sounds like a lesser A8 as well.
