Default Riff-Off 2.3: Chumble Spuzz vs. Inkvayvanhailstone

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

    *** UPDATE ***

Inkvayvanhailstone sent me an updated riff three days ago (before the deadline), but it hit my spam folder, so I missed it. I've updated the riff. If anyone who voted when the old riff was up and feels their vote would have changed, please PM me and let me know so I can make a manual change.

    **************

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 3 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are two head-to-head battles. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other Round 3 battle, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here are the links to each clip in this battle:

    Chumble Spuzz

    Inkvayvanhailstone

If you run into any technical issues or have other question regarding the Riff-Off, contact me via email (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

    Have fun!

Chumble: way, way cool! Greasy, dirty and tough. In the way I felt Carlos was a Load/Reload-esque effort in the last round (which I voted for), this also reminds me of some Metallica works - perhaps the Black Album. I love how you don't incorporate harmonies into this one. But, what I really like with this one is the harmonics you have in between, those are killer. Props for a (in my opinion) better sound quality than the last round too. Good stuff, Chumble!

Inkvay: it's funny, given the last effort from you, it seems that Chumble's riff for this round would be the natural riff for you in the next round.. but then you surprise us with something totally different! Shows versatility, and that's good, although I don't really take past efforts into account when I vote. This is something that would fit right into a comedy detective series/movie. I love the cascading (?) harmonics that you have timed perfectly - you leave us just on the edge, and then that comes. Very cool. Actually, when I listen to those harmonics, I kinda wait for the harmonics to ring out, and delve into more "airy" playing on top of the subsequent riff, played by guitar 2.

Impressive effort by both! I'm very unsure what I want to vote, so I'll chew a bit on that for a little time.

Good solid riff from chumble here, heavy feel and groove

Inky went for a new approach here and the riff is good but I would have preferred a little more pace

Chumble: Fast, aggressive, goes for the throat. Short and to the point. A SHARP point on the edge of a knife, hehe. I like the little harmonics at the turnaround, too. Less spacious than the previous submission but there's more focus here, and I like that.

    Inkvay:
Groovy and cool... I thought it was an octave pedal at first but the harmonics and double-stops at the turnaround reveal it's just a well-intonated guitar with a nice even smooth tone. I had to listen a second time to get that it was a shuffle beat... that's important to know to fully get the riff. Good job!

Chumble got my vote . The energy is right, the pace is right and it pretty fluent!

Inkway has a cool riff actually, but without background and a singer, it feels somehow naked.
    I liked both!

I think Inkvay's has more POTENTIAL here. I felt like it was almost a Deep Purple type of intro, where the hammer would be laid down in a few more bars. It's perfect for an intro, but it can't quite stand up to the energy that Chumble delivered. Chumble gets my vote for that (and his excellent guitar work of course).

That's the first thing i felt. Could have a kinda 'Pink Panther' groove about it. Great use of space, and i interpret it as having a swing feel about it. 'Less is more' ftw.

    Humm...

It's nice and all (the wah is cool), but I actually liked the first version better.. The use of harmonics was one of the main pros about it, I saw that as very clever. But it's gone now.

    Still thinking about this one.

Question: are we to completely disregard Inky's first effort?

Yes, since the new riff version is the one Inky intended in the first place.

Can't stress enough how everyone's really bringin it this round....

tough vote! chumble really nailed (writing & execution) that forward-moving heavy sound, while inky really created a really original mood-invoking riff...this guy's versatile!

    again, tough vote for me!

Because of that 'Almost Deep Purple' I felt that there wasn't enough 'new' in this riff.
