    Default The Best Rhythm Guitarists?

Who are the best rhythm guitarists of the:

    50s:
    60s:
    70s:
    80s:
    90s:
    00s:

I'm looking for new bands to look at and right now I am studying rhythm really in depth. Any oddballs, no names, underrated players, or just great players in general would be appreciated. I would also like different styles of music, anything from rock to blues to jazz to punk to folk, whatever.

    Thanks you guys, Andrew

    Hmm...

60s: Pete Townshend. Love the opening chords to 'Can't Explain' and the fills in Pictures of Lily'. Rickenbacker + Vox helps too.
Hendrix, stuff like 'Castles Made of Sand' and the improvisational stuff from Woodstock.

70s-80s: EVH played some cool rhythm chops with a tight swing feel, like one 'I'm The One' and 'Hot For Teacher'. Some of the metallers of the 80s, like Hetfield, chaps in Slayer for serious riffage. Joe Pass in the 70s, see the album Virtuoso. Brian Setzer's rockabilly revival in the 80s.

00s: Gabriela Quintero in Rodrigo y Gabriela. Pull up YouTube and see what I mean.

60s-present: Paco de Lucia. Arguably the flamenco master. Having said that, you should check out flamenco music in general because of its strong emphasis on rhythm. Some prominent players in the genre include Nino Ricardo, Sabicas, Vicente Amigo, Grisha Goryachev, Paco Pena.

    50s : don't really listen to 50s music:
60s : Jimi Hendrix (don't like most of his lead playing, his rhythm on the other hand, incredible) and Tony Iommi.
Wes Montgomery, while known for his leads, was also amazing on rhythm duties.
    70s: Tony Iommi again

The 80s and onwards is more my element.
80s : Joe Satriani (seriously, he is actually an amazing rhythm player), James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Eric Peterson (of Testament), Chuck Schuldiner, Trey Azagthoth.

90s : Bucketloads of players I could list.
Dave Grohl, Frederik Thordendal, Mårten Hagstrom, Stephen Carpenter, Omar Rodriguez Lopez.
    Jeff Buckley, hugely underrated guitarist

00s: Once again, the beast that is Meshuggah (Frederik Thordendal, Mårten Hagstrom) as both as simply forces of nature.
    Omar Rodriguez Lopez once again.
Josh Farro and Taylor York from alternative rock band Paramore are super tight.
    Anders Nyström from Katatonia.
    Joe Duplantier from Gojira
Matt Devries and Rob Arnold from Chimaira
    Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth.

Contrary to popular belief, Buckethead is not only a lead player, but a guy who writes plenty of great riffs.
Could list more, but I'd be here for ages lol

All I know is that Josh from Sylosis is the tightest rhythm guitarist in the world as far as I'm concerned. He sometimes get's phase issues because of how tightly he can track rhythm gtrs.

Yeah, Joe pulls of some tasty grooves.

Well, Bucky can play probably just about anything. He's a pretty mean bassist too. The slap type stuff he does on the guitar is pretty cool, like in the backyard video from the early 90s that is on YouTube.

this might be slightly biased towards the end (because of when metal evolved) but anyway:

    50's: Chuck Berry
60's: no idea, maybe Hendrix, more likely CSN
    70's: Tony Iommi
80's: tie between James Hetfield and Eric Peterson (Testament)
    90's: John Schaffer (Iced Earth)
00's: hard to say...there's so many astonishingly tight rhythm players around now.

    Oh. My. Gosh.

No disrespect, but... looking at the answers here clearly shows that Metal is actually bad for ya, as almost nobody seems to grasp the very notion of the most basic component of music: "Rythm".

I shake my head in disbelief...

It's ok, just flame away; got my asbestos underwear ready for cases just like this.

    how about ...not avril lavigne.

If she gets a signature guitar (even if just from squier) I think we all should.
