Dean DeLeo's rhythm often reminded me of EVH. That's a good thing.

This machine kills fascists

My vote for fave 'modern' rhythm...I don't think of EVH when i listen to Dean, I don't know who he reminds me of...all I know is he plays very unusual chords, maybe even makes up his own. His phrasing, style, tone and leads make the songs perfect...like how Elliot Easton always had the perfect lead for every song. I also think it's very kool how 2 brothers can play guitar and bass in the same band and just kill it.
Gibson KS 336, LP Standard, Special and Customs
Bogner, Orange, Tech 21 and Fender amps
Celestion speakers
Duncan, Bare Knuckle, WCR and Gibson pups
Too many pedals....

And now the heavyweight rhythm champion of all time: Freddie Green!
Of course not being alive means his new work is a a bit hard to listen to so the current champion (for me) is Steve Cropper.
However I agree with all the cudos for the incomparable EVH for rewriting the book on rock rhythm guitar as well as having bucketloads of feel and groove.
