Default How would you get this sound?

Here's a youtube clip of a guy called Philip Sayce I've been listening to alot recently.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPuYugh0TAA

With an alder body rosewood/maple neck how would some of you get his tone in terms of pickups? I know tone is in the hands of the player so lets just pretend hes come to you and said I've lost my number 1 guitar, I need pick-ups to capture that sound again...What would you pick? Are you thinking duncan antiquity texas hot?

Looks and sounds like a Rory Gallagher strat to me. Expensive guitar but totally sweet. I used to go to this one guitar store and play it every weekend then decided it's just too much to pay for a Fender strat. It felt like a guitar I had been playing for 20 years.

Uh buy some 62' strat pickups then. I don't think there's anything extraordinary about his sound. It sounds like a Fender Bassman and a strat. Try the Gallagher strat and tell me it doesn't sound like that. Unless I'm missing something or you're not asking the right question.

Fender don't sell the pick-ups separately that they have on their 60s custom shop strats. The 57/62 ones they do sell are not the same as the custom shop ones found on a whole load of their vintage re-issues and the Rory Gallagher strat. His sound isn't anything unique, but i'm using him as an example. I was really looking for some pick-ups that would allow me to get this sort of sound. I've tried the surfers and they're way too jangly for this sort of thing. So I was leaning towards the texas hots which are meant to be warmer and have a better mid-range. I thought I'd ask the experts on the forum before I signed off on buying them.

Ok I understand what you're asking now. I'm not an expert. I just thought it sounded like the Rory strat I was talking about.

I remember a YT video where Philip told how he could afford buying that old battered '62 Strat after touring with Jeff Healy. I guess it was a '62. It looks like the YT video has been pulled. A very loud old Fender amp and a Fuzz pedal is a good starting point!
Of course there is some pickup advise in the SD Forum
