parallel axis in soloist!

I snagged an original parallel axis off of ebay and stuck in in my soloist. Wow...great sound. Sweet yet aggressive. Smooth yet a little rough. The overall voice just seems more "alive" then other humbuckers I've tried...

If you are tired of the same old same old in your soloist, try the PATB1! Highly recommended...

But does it blend!?.. err, thrash? Is it tighter or looser than a JB? Or can you think of another pickup to compare it to for speed metal?

I'm torn between PATB-1 and PATB-2, but haven't found anyone using the PATB-1 for the sort of tight rhythms I'm looking for. Huge loose riffs with PATB-1, sure. Tight non-overgained metal? Not so much.

I've heard people pull off sounds somewhere between Ted Nugent & Eddie Van Halen (woolly but sweet, rather unexpected combination) with the PATB-1, so I know it sounds good, just not what it's limits are...

Love the JB. It's not leaving my SL2H. I'd have to buy another soloist to try it out.

I haven't heard the patb2. The patb1 is heavy enough for sure. I would say it is a bit more aggressive and raw sounding than the JB and full shred. Output is about the same. It has its own voice - mids are nice and highs/lows are balanced. It is not as pretty sounding as the JB and full shred. Aggressive, yet also a bit sweet sounding. You need to try it to see what I'm talking about! I welcomed it in my soloist after the JB/full shred, which sounded too stereotypical.

Would you say it sounds more like the Custom than the JB?

I'm suspicious that the PATB-1 is the PATB equivalent of the Custom. Like the PATB-2 is to a Distortion, or a PATB-3 is to a '59.

Not quite as overwound in comparison to it's equivalent.

I've heard a few clips of the PATB-1 sounding somewhere between a Custom 5 and a Custom Custom, only hotter & woollier than one of those in a Les Paul. Which is what you'd expect of a PATB pickup...

If it can still manage tight thrash while sounding like that for lower gain, it sounds like my perfect all-around pickup for this guitar.

There's a couple of old posts (by different posters) that claim that if you back the volume off to about 70%, it sounds indistinguishable from a '59*. With a particular value of volume pot, though.

*or maybe a '59 in a different guitar, as a real '59 sometimes sounds thin in a floating Floyded superstrat, and that's part of what the Parallel Axis design targets...

I have both the PATB-1 and 3. The PATB-1 is pretty much like a Custom 5 to me, but in a good way: less scoop and better definition of the bass strings. I liked it more than the C5. The PATB-3 is amazing: certainly a great PAF flavor, but clearer and more definition than an overwound PAF. It has still this legendary Telecaster-Les Paul feeling you hear in Zep songs. Throw as much gain on it as you like, it never drowns in the mix. Amazing!
