Default Duncan Custom Custom vs. Duncan 78

In your opinions which if these two pickups would the most aggressive, and which one would be the brightest,I know the custom custom has more output, just need some opinions, from what i heard the custom custom was designed and made for van halen, but was the 78 made for van halen also..

The '78 is going to be brighter and more aggressive sounding - IMO

They have nothing in common, in fact that are at the opposite end of sounds for a Les Paul.

The CC, to my ears, lacks any form of treble in a Les Paul. That doesn't rule out it does good things elsewhere or for other people.

The '78 is very aggressive, has a lot of extra sparkle. More so than the A5 Brobucker. Can the thin.

Don't be fooled by the A2/A5 thing. With boutique pickups that goes right out the window.

Yes, the '78 is going to be more sggressive than the CC. Yes the CC is hotter than the '78, but the CC has evenly wound coils and has a smooth top end. The '78 has mis-matched coils, so it is going to be more chewy and have more 'bite' to it.

The '78 is good for early VH-roth yrs. it goes well with a strat type guitar with a vintage style tremolo.

The CC is good for the later hagar VH yrs. It is great with a strat style guitar that has a floyd rose

Schecter has had some great guitars with Custom Customs. Mahogany set necks with plenty plenty of treble.

It's all a matter of the right pickup for the guitar. When it works, the CC is awesome. EVH demonstrated that all over the mid to late DLR years.

From the clips I've heard, the Custom Custom is hotter and more compressed but usually a bit darker. The '78 has a bit more bite, and is more chewy where the CC has a bit more bass squish.

'78 is VH I & II brass vintage trem bits (fixed bridge parts being the Super 70), CC is most of Women & Children First through 1984. (Excluding Little Guitars and whatnot.)

[Nice, Christopher Caruana, your post wasn't there when I started writing mine ]

what do you mean when you say it has more output?

higher dc resistance, to me, means it's a tad more distorted (or less clean) and is darker sounding.

+1 to what uOpt said. I'd just like to point out that the CC has a lot of compression (too much for me) while the '78 has just the right hint of it.

IMO, the '78 will be the aggressive.........

    78's have evenly matched coils.

Funny, there are multiple reports of the slug coil being 0.4-0.5K hotter than the screw coil on recent '78s.

It all depends on the type of guitar that the pickup is going in(im talking bridge position),the specific guitar that im talking about is a Ibanez rg1550,basswood body, maple neck, floating Ibanez edge pro trem(floyd rose type),i tried the duncan 59 in that guitar(my favorite pickup in a ash body guitar)and it was to bright and thin,it had no body to the sound, probably due to the floating trem,i tried the duncan 78 and it reacted the same way,i just put in the duncan custom custom and the guitar came to life, very early van halen sounding, nice edge and body to the sound,it wasnt thin at all and it wasnt brittle bright,it had a nice brightness and top end,i think that the custom custom was designed to bring back body to a guitar with i floyd rose type of trem, floyd rose trems tend to be thin sounding to begin with, anyway the custom custom worked out.........

I asked MJ about it a couple years ago when I ordered it, because I wondered if they were balanced or not.

They are balanced. I believe her over most of the self proclaimed experts on internet forums.........
