Default What wood is my SX 335 really made from ?

    Hi Guys,

I have an SX 335. It has upgraded tuners and Custom 5 + 59 pickups.

Upgrading the pickups made a huge difference to the sound. But I'm wondering if upgrading the really cheap plastic nut to a bone nut will be worth it or not?

It's a pretty heavy guitar actually, because the mid section is all solid. Also - no f holes.

A concern i have with this guitar - is there is a crack going all around the neck join - from one side of the fingerboard, around the heel all the way to the other side. But i slid a razorblade in there, and the crack doesn't go deep. So it looks like just the paint cracked because of the neck bending to the strings...

Could you take a look at these pictures and tell me how good you think this wood is:

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not a complete expert and that's a fairly tough question - do you know what it was made from? Does it say on the site? All I can tell is that it looks two piece.

Re: the nut could help with tuning issues if you have any, and though different materials do have an impact on sound, it's not as much as say pickups.

And on the neck joint and the paint cracking - have you had it setup? Does it play well?

They don't have any more SX 335s at rondo.

But i believe the body was maple, and neck is mahogany.

I just wonder if it could have been mystery wood or a very low grade scrap wood instead...

The guitar plays nice, and aside from my usual tweaking, it played just fine out of the box. I did polish the frets with steel wool though and that helped a bunch. I oil the fingerboard, and i've redone the electronics twice on it. But i just think the nut is made from a really cheap plastic, and bone would sound much better. Maybe a tailpiece upgrade would also help though. After that - there is nothing else left to upgrade virtually...

Wow, no F-holes; must've been a tough job to upgrade the electronics... I feel your pain.

Anyway, a good nut is half the guitar's sound.

Yeah it was a pain. Now i made it so the pickups can just be changed by soldering them to the long lead wires which go into the body. Originally i had to use fishing line on the 4 pots to pull them back into their holes, and wires were getting tangled inside. it was a pain, but got it done.

I just noticed that! How the **** did you replace the pups?! Did you do it all through the pickup cavities? That must've been hell.

Anyway, if you like the guitar then it deserves a new nut, that's my motto. It's not a hideously expensive mod and it can do wonders for how it'll sound and play.

Most SX guitars are made from a laminate of the bones of Chinese orphans.

That's fine, because, as everyone with an ear knows, female orphan bones have better sustain.

They have more calcium. There's got to be some kind of correlation there.

Well, that decides it. I'm feeding all my guitars osteoporosis meds starting tonight. It's a good thing I know an unscrupulous doctor.
