A2P compared to JB2 & JB8. Other magnet swapping questions.

I'm very intrigued by magnet swapping, and I have a JB and Dimarzio Super II that I could mess with. My Les Paul LOVES the APH-1B, not so much the Brobucker or Antiquity for some reason. Now, what magnet swaps could get me into the realm of whatever it is about the A2P that this guitar loves with the JB and Super II?

I've never swapped magnets, but there seems to be enough info on this site to where it would be a quick and easy thing to do as soon as I get some. When looking for magnets, is there a quality difference or is a magnet a magnet?

Well you could try an A2 magnet (hence Alnico 2 Pro), but the JB and A2p are really on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to windings. Alot of people have had success with an A2 in a JB. It is a very easy process and fairly cheap. Most people around here suggest wymoreguitars.com for getting magenets. Throught them it should cost about $25-30 shipped for one of each magnet type. You could also leave out an A5 from the order to keep costs down (the JB already has an A5 stock).

A3's have limited applications, they're like a weaker A5 without the low end. I think A2, A4, and A8 are the most useful (assuming that you'll have wind up with a spare A5 or two).

Meh, not quite.

A3s are much closer to an A2, with slightly less (and slightly shifter higher mids), a little less treble and a little less bass. They also have less output.


If you do a search, you might find some clips from Doc Barlo that are *very* representative of what an a3 sounds like.

I ordered magnets from Mojotone and he sent mine uncharged
worthless pieces of steel

tried charging them on one of the strong magnets at work
only one seems to have taken an even charge

the others appear to have dead spots

randomly two adjacent poles will just be dead
no sound from them

does anyone have any suggestions on how to properly charge these magnets?

can it be done on a large speaker magnet?

would I have to demag them first?

anyone?

There's info in this video on how to magnetise them. The 'rare earth' magnets he talks about are widely available and a wee google search should turn them up pretty quickly. They go for about $10-15 as far as I know, so depending on how much shipping back and forth is going to cost it's probably more to your advantage just to get some of the neo-dyms for yourself, they might come in handy in the future. Plus, powerful magnets are fun to play with.
