I setup my guitars for optimum playablility with lowest action and I use Bill Lawrence recommendations for setting pup height

I set my electrics up with 11's. They naturally pull the neck up a bit & I like it like that. I have a touch more relief then what is considered normal & I play with fairly high action. Being a blues/blues-rock type of player I need the height to play slide & to do those Albert King/ SRV type of bends.

My acoustics are setup with 13's and I also play with a bit more height. I use many alternate tunings and when you drop the strings down a step you need something that won't get to floppy and the added height is helpful also.

I always start with a factory set up or specs as a starting point...

Play for a while, see what feels/sounds wrong (if any) and tweak accordingly.

I need a high action for the constant string bending I do, so I set-up according to my needs. I don't know, or care, what the manufacturer's specs are; I'm the one playing it, not them. One size does not fit all.

With the three guitars I've owned I was happy with the stock setup until I started messing with different tunings, string gauges... at that point I had to adjust the truss rod, action, intonation and pickup height to get the feel to where I like it.

Guitars I try in store usually feel pretty good though. In the end it always ends up being a personal adjustment. Like others here, I have no idea what factory specs are. I was on a medium-high action kick for awhile but I'm back to medium-low on my Schecter. In terms of pickup height I can't remember if it was Bill Lawrence or Seymour I took the cue from, but I stick two nickels on the bass side and one on the treble side of the bridge pickup, then raise the sides until the nickels are just about to kiss the strings. I raise the neck pickup until the balance sounds right to me.
