Default Weird sustain at high frets?

I was playing my Jaguar unplugged today and played a little melody on the higher frets. I noticed the notes wouldnt stop ringing- it was feedback kind of sound. I thought it was really unsual, and kept experimenting. I found that its definitely the string vibrating: if I mute it with my palm, it stops. if i take my fretting hand off of the note however, it doesnt, and the note rings out for a while.

    weird?

Could it be that the parts of the strings behind the bridge, which are quite long on a Jaguar, are resonating in sympathy with some high notes, and keep ringing after you've stopped fretting the note?

This sounds like a likely culprit. Sometimes when playing certain notes I find even after I let go of them one or two strings vibrate at the same pitch.

Try putting your hand on each other string one at a time when this happens, and you should find the one (or ones) that resonates with that note.

My Jaguar is a hard tail.

not mine, but a better shot of the bridge:

I rest my hand on the strings between the bridge and tailpiece. count that out. no other strings are ringing either. I hear the sound come from inside the pickguard.

Suggestion #1 - Plenty of routed out channels and control cavities on a Jag. Ample opportunity for acoustic resonance.
Suggestion #2 - Shallow string break angle over the TOM saddles.

Shallow? as in plenty of clearance? nope.

I'd say suggestion 1 sounds very possible. its practically semi hollow.

No. Shallow as in the angle between the saddles and the tailpiece being approximately 20 degrees - probably less.

These weird clunks and overtones are precisely why I own a Jaguar.
