does the Sh-5 have a regular size ceramic mag in it?
id assume so cause its a part of the custom series.

yep, sure does
Never heard if anyone ever tried the Custom SH5/TB5 with an oversized ceramic from a Duncan Distortion. Please report results if you have tried this.

i did it, tried it in my LP. actually preferred the sound of the regular SH-5, but this may be a personal thing on my part; i also preferred the regular sized ceramic to the double-thick or oversized novelty dimarzio ceramic in the demon as well.
i'm trying to think of a better way to explain it, but it was as if the size of the mag made it sound too 'broad' and sacrificed dynamics. could be a good option in a strat, or else something else other than a chunky semi-hollow short-scale set-neck
dr. ad, you would probably love the sound of the Duncan Distorion Lite or JB + (ceramic). It's sort of a best of both worlds kind of sound rather than a compromise.

i have been meaning to try that...

I have a ceramic mag in my converted SH-5 (used to be an SH-14) that is 1.5 x the thickness of a regular mag.
sounds great, but there's really not that much more magnetic material, so i don't think it makes that much of an impact on the tone.

ceramics are pretty solid in terms of holding charge, but physically brittle; alnico may lose charge if dropped or shipped/stored carelessly but you can't break them.
i 'charge up' alnico mags with a ceramic before loading them; am yet to get Wymored

well i doubt it's a 'correct' method, but i just move an opposite pole on a cermic mag through the alnico pole's field
you'll figure it out
do ceramic mags vary in quality? like something out of a cheapo guitar compared to a high end company?
