    Post Bassline Smb4d pickup

I am in the process of building my own bass and am going to order/install the bassline smb4d pickup but am wandering if the pickup comes with the pots or do I have to order them seperately? could someone let me know asap? Thanks. Cheers!

    welcome to the forum!

as far as i know you would need to get pots on your own. if you buy an active preamp or pup they will typically come with pots but passive pups dont.

    + 1

If you require active EQ, order the STC2p or STC-3p Tone Circuit. This includes the PCB and correct resistance value pots to work with your chosen pickup.

Thanks! It is an active pickup so does that mean I don't need new pots, or just tone ones?
    Cheers!

ummm... the smb4d is not an active pup. musicman basses typically have passive pups with active electronics, not active pups

Arse! jeremy beat me to it. EMG and Bartolini offer active MM replacement pickups. Most others are passive. Only the EQ circuitry is active.

Correction to my earlier post. If your are building a single PU bass, you actually require the STC-3M3 or -3M4 EQ kit.

My mistake. I don't what I was thinking. Thanks guys for clarifying that for me. So I will need to buy a seperate pot that will allow me make it active then? Thanks for all the help.

    Cheers.

I think you're getting confused between active pickups and active eq. If a pickup is passive, you can in no way, shape, or form make it an active pickup. As far as I know, at least.

you dont need any active electronics. you can run it passive and it will still sound very cool.

you will need controls for the pup one way or another. if you want an active preamp then when you buy the preamp it will probably come with the controls you require for that install. if you want to keep it passive you will need to get controls seperately.

correct. you cannot make a passive pup active after the fact, you can run your passive pup thru an active preamp but the pup itself will still be passive.

this is a nice way to do it since active requires power. if you have an active pup and your battery dies then your pup dies too. with passive pups and active electronics if you have a switch to bypass the active electronics your pup will still work fine.
