    Default About selecting coils on auto-split

    Hello, every time I try to install an auto-split, for the bridge pickup, the coil that has been selected was the one that is near to the bridge itself.
    I you see the SD wiring scheme about autosplit, the coil near to the middle pickup is supposed to be selected, but nothing like that never happened. I tried with an Alnico II Pro, a Custom, and now with a JB.

    I really don´t understand how the five position switch works...it´s really a mistery for me, can someone explain me to me, please? And why all the times the bridge position coil is selected?

    I´m interested to try, at least, the coil near to the middle pickup, the other configuration sounds too thin, for my taste.

    Thanks

    Most auto-tap wiring diagrams have you ground the red/white wires. If you connect the red/white to hot instead, it will tap to the other coil (requires a Super Switch.)

    The five-way selector switch has two sets of contacts. On your guitar, one of these sets is selecting between the neck, centre and bridge pickups. On a vintage Stratocaster, the second set of contacts feeds the pickup signal(s) to the indivual tone pots.

    On guitars with Master Volume, Master Tone control pots, the second set of contacts is free to do other duties. In your case, that is the auto coil-tapping of the HB when combined with the centre single coil.

    There are several ways of arranging which wires are soldered where. In all cases, the linked red/white conductors from the HB are linked via the switch contacts to ground, thereby shutting off one coil.

    Which coil gets shut off is determined by which conductor of the humbucker has been grounded and which has been soldered to the selctor switch.

    If your circuit always taps to leave the coil nearer the bridge on, try reversing the black and green conductors. (This may mess up the phase relationship with the centre PU.) If your bridge position HB is symmetrical, leave the wiring alone. Just remount the pickup 180 degrees about.

    Try reconnecting the conductors as
    Red = Hot
    Green/Black = Link/Tap
    White = Ground

    Ahh...thanks, I understood now what happened.
    I´m using a Fender pickup in the middle, so I reversed the green/black wires avoiding the out of phase problem!
    So, my green wire is connected to the selector switch, and the black to volume control. That´s why the bridge coil has been selected, instead of the other.

    Well, soon I will buy some SD single coils, most probably the problem will be solved, thanks!
