Default How To Spot A Fake PRS

I can spot one of the Chinese Gibsons pretty easy but I have no clue what to look for on a PRS. I've got a guy who has a singlecut McCarty with a 10 top that's wanting to trade me for a couple shotguns. Tell me some of the things to look out for on a PRS that will let me know if it's real or a chinese fake. I know on Gibsons it's pretty easy to tell. Customs with rosewood boards, Standards with a trap inlay on the first fret, metric bridges, etc.

I been jonesin for a PRS and I love the color of this one. The only thing I don't dig is it doesn't have the birds. If everything checks out on it and I end up trading for it, I may try to find someone that does inlay to put the abalone birds in for me.

I'll post te only pics I've gotten of it so far. He's suppossed to email me some more.

The fake PRS have been pretty easy to spot (really messed up birds, really sloppy work all the way around, incorrect looking bridges, etc).

That guitar looks way too nice to be a fake. Buy it!

I dealt with a guy who was importing them when I lived in Dallas. As for spotting a fake one, there's a few clues.

The fretwork will look sub par.
Fretboards use lesser grade wood (you owning several LP's will know the difference)
hardware is stamped china on the underside.
Birds (if it has any) are deeply set with a huge clear over them (you can tell)

In general, it looks cheap. Finish flaws, bad workmanship, and a cheap feel.

That one looks real, but it looks like aftermarket strap buttons.
If you play guitar chest-high, you play from your heart.

If you play guitar waist-high, you play from your guts.

If you play guitar low, you play from your huevos.

Yup, those look like Dunlop Strap locks.

Anyways, with PRS guitars, and this will sound like flattery... but... you can totally tell if you are use to dealing with quality guitars. They deal with such consistent standards of wood and quality control, that you will know.

Yeah, if you've ever owned a PRS (or even spent much time just playing one) you could identify one pretty much dead-on every time by feel even if you were blindfolded and someone handed it to you.

The two PRS guitars I've owned have been a McCarty with a solid rosewood neck and a Mira, and while they're probably the two most different solid body models from each other that PRS makes, they both unmistakeably felt like a PRS.

no seriously, that's not good advice. don't do it, mang.

ed roman will try to tell you that what you've got is sh*tty, and will retop it for a good price so you can have a "premium" looking top. pfft.

I didn't say you had to believe what he said. But he does know a thing about PRS values and can tell you if it is genuine or not.

Kluson tulip heads? And does the head look a bit short? Granted I'm no PRS expert, but I can't say I've seen one with Klusons on it, and that top part of the head should be a bit longer IIRC.
