As I Lay Dying uses fake cabs. Their set up is 3 cabs by 3 cabs, on either side of the stage. Only the bottom row of cabs on either side of the stage are real. The other 12 are empty cabs with only a screen mesh on the front containing part of the bands logo.

They may be real cabs but I can't imagine that they were actually used as anything more than stage props. Then again I've been wrong before.

If people don't like it real, they can stuff it. YMMV.
It's just part of the stage set. They're entertainers. It doesn't matter whether you're talking about Steely Dan or Ke$ha - they're all putting on a show, and their audience has certain expectations about what makes for a great show.

A wall of amps looks cool in the context of a metal band, but a real wall of amps is a. expensive, b. a huge PITA to haul across the country, and c. a nightmare for the sound engineer. On that point, you should be glad that they're doing it this way instead of using real amps, because it proves that they actually give a crap about how they sound to their audience.

Angus hasn't used a Marshall for about 20 years now all of AC/DC play through Wizzard amps. In fact I think Angus and Malcolm part own the company.

John Petrucci uses unfilled cabs (at least on the Maiden tour). His live backline is 8 4x12 cabs done as 4 full stacks. Those stacks are split into pairs and bolted together (so 4 cabs and two heads are one piece).

At both the Vancouver and Calgary shows I watched two techs move those things. At Vancouver they actually had to lift it for some reason, and there's no way that 2 guys can lift 4 4x12 cabs bolted together with two MKV heads on them at one time. Not to mention they did not look like they were straining. Plus the cabs weren't mic'd at all at both shows.

That vid with Scott Ian was neat. I'd read that AC/DC are Wizard users but I'd never actually seen it.

As for the fake amp wall... meh. Whatever. At that level your job description also includes "entertainer" and thus it's your job to entertain people in some way. I sure as hell wouldn't wanna haul around a wall of real amps. One some level I think a little smoke and mirrors here and there is fine. When you start leaning on it as the core of your act though somethings gonna go wrong eventually.

I have been to a concert where there was an amp wall going... Yngwie Malmsteen in a large club using 10 4x12 cabs. They were slaved to 2 master heads but there were also 10 real other heads as well... 2 heads on top of 2 cabs, repeat 5 times. And All of those cabs were running. The crew didn't even put him through the PA... no need to. Hellaciously loud... it was almost just noise. I walked out after a half hour. Too much amp for that venue.

Oh boo hoo hoo there's no Great And Powerful Oz, it's just some old man behind the curtain with smoke and mirrors.

Good God, do you really think it'll sound good to have a wall of amps? No, it will not. It will be LOUD. LOUD does not equal good.

Even Brian May stated he uses a miked Vox combo and that Vox wall behind him was nothing but empty shells. You want to argue with Brian Fkn May you go right ahead. Haven't seen your name on a billion-dollar band, have I?

Fake wall of amps: 3 times the transportability @ 1/5th the weight. That's cool and all, but could they at least spring for full depth fakies on the ends of the wall?

If I'm ever a big rock star, I'm gonna put a fake tweed Champ on stage, but actually play through a pair of Mesa full stacks.

When I saw VH in 2007 they had a wall of amps. I'm pretty sure none of them were plugged in.
