Tophat knobs for Tele
I bought one of these from StewMac
Problem is the slot to fit over the switch tip is very short, like it's made for a strat or some other type of switch.
Do all tophats have this short slot? I really don't want to stick with the barrel tip as it's harder to manipulate when its almost touching the volume control.

The slot is the same size as a standard Tele tip or a Strat tip but the whoe thing is taller...the idea behind the top hat tips was to get the pickup selector up above the knobs for easy use...
Maybe try a strat switch tip or bend the 3 way lever out of the way ala Danny Gatton...

If the switch location is really bothersom to you maybe one of these will work...

There is the angled version and the 3 way toggle version plus on their "standard" version the volume control is actualyl moved to be a little farther from the 3 way.

yeah, the slots are supposed to all be the same, since the switches are also supposed to be the same sizes.
FWIW, the guy at Taipan tone has had health issues. Probably best to find something else.
I've had a simple order in since March with nothing to show, and no returned emails.

see how narrow(short?) the slot is on the tophat vs. the barrel?

I don't think it'll matter much in terms of fit...

The tophat should cure my issue of being able to flip it quickly on the fly vs. the barrel, as you said it sits higher above the volume knob.

Maybe try finding a top hat from another location?
So, it won't gon on at all or it won't go down all the way?
I see what you mean now, i've bought a few barrell style tips with that little slit before and they didn't fit anything I had...I think they are for import switches.
I hate to say it because it'll cost 3 times what the Stew Mac version did but buy one thats a Fender part...that'll get you there!

what I'm getting at is- is my switch tip a non normal size for a Tele? or this an issue with the knob from stewmac? (it won't go on at all)

Thats what Im saying...I think that the Stew-Mac tip is for a smaller blade switch like youd find on an import Tele copy or a MIC Squire...the switch in your road worn is a full size switch and if you buy a Fender brand Top Hat tip you'll be good to go.

OK - gotcha-thanks for the clarification bro!I thought you meant the opposite-the knob was correct for a MIA part, and the issue was an import size switch(tip). That pic helps too! thanks.
I'll snag a Fender knob at some point. I just wonder if it's worth sending the stewmac one back, by the time I pay shipping...grrr.

That does seem odd. But maybe it will actually help it stay on better. Try heating the bare switch lever with a lighter and then pressing the plastic tip on. Maybe they make them that way so they will fit levers of all sizes, not just proper Fender switches.
It's worth a call or e-mail to Stew Mac to see what's up.
