    Question bridge p-rails

    hi all, first post here.

just got my new p-rails (bridge) and had it installed on my Ibanez Artcore AFS-75T. Its a hollow body guitar but its kinda like an ES-335 because its thin but without the solid block in the middle. Anyway, I had that installed along with the planet waves locking tuners which works like a charm. so the guitar tech told me that he installed a normal push pull switch on to the bridge volume knob. so im a complete newbie at this, he was talking about a parellel and series when in humbucking mode, when the switch is down. and when its pulled up it goes to p-90 and when volume is 0 its like pure p-90. through experementation i found out that when volume on this pickup is to 10, you can also use the tone knob with it which was cool. so im liking it so far especially the p-90 but looking through some demos on youtube about the p-rails, I'm kinda wondering about the rails on the pickup thats unusable right now( he said another switch is needed to be installed for that). im on a tight budget and i cant do this myself( im too scared and i have no tools hehe).

So can anyone set me straight, on a guitar such as this, is there real tone difference between the p-90 and the rail tone. I kinda wanna have a strat tone of some sort on my guitar. Is it worth it to have a tech install another part on the guitar to get the rails to work? Also, if by any chance I decide to do it, what do I need to install on the guitar to use all 3 (hum, p-90, rails) I read a DPDT switch or a 3 way switch somewhere. Sorry for all the newbie questions.

If the Triple Shot mounting ring is within your budget (around $30) then you can have all the options right at your mounting ring, with no extra switches needed.

oh yes, i did hear about the triple shot but i never figured it was just what i needed.

so, that push pull switch in there cant be used anymore right? i'll have to take the wires off that and connect them to the triple shot pcb? or is there a setup where it might still be useful?

so searching musiciansfriend yielded a curved and a flat triple shot. i wonder if it matters on my guitar.

and... didnt get an answer about the tone of the rails on a guitar like this. does it somehow come close to a strat sound? coz this guitar is very different, maybe a tad darker-sounding. i wonder if its even worth it to get the triple shot just to use the rails. but i just keep imagining getting a strat sound out of a hollow body and the p-90 tone has really grown on me, i find that i can use it for a lot of rhythm and strumming sounds. really cool.

It won't get exactly like a Strat, but kinda close (different woods, different scale length, different design, etc.). But the rail coil is very useful in th P-Rails. I use it alot for rhythm and very clean leads. Of course, the P-90 is my favorite coil, but not just for rhythms...for LEAD! The P-90 is my favorite pup of all time. Next would be Pearly Gates.

So, get the Triple Shot and use your existing switch for out of phase between the neck and bridge. You'll be ever so happy you did.

Check out this thread on p-rails. You should flip the rail side towards the bridge to get a more distinguished single coil twang sound out of it.

The triple shot will take care of all of your switching needs of course, but if you don't want to leave your push/pull unused, your tech can do the phase or series/parallel mod. The instructions for such mods come with the triple shot instructions I believe.

Les Pauls tend to be the only guitars that need the "carved" triple shot rings. I got some carved rings for my schecter, they will work on any guitar, but will leave an annoying arched gap. I'm quite positive you need the flat rings.
