Default I'm going to be studying with one of the best guitarists in North America..

I just got an email from Lorne Lofsky this morning. It said basically that the head of the music program had recommended me to him, and in general only the best upper year players get to study with him..

He made it big in the early 80s to mid 90s as a the guitar player travelling with Oscar Peterson:

..I guess one of these days I'm going to just have to accept that I'm a fairly good guitar player.

EDIT: And another clip of him, this one shows just how terrifyingly good he is. He improvises with full chordal harmonies. And yes, those are Cool Rails in his guitar.

Wow. What an exciting opportunity TP! Congrats.

Cool to see an old Roadstar still getting a workout, too!

Sounds like a great learning experience. You'll go away a much stronger player.

And, that's the only time I've ever seen an Ibanez Roadstar used for Jazz, but it sounds good.

I'm not a jazz guy for the most part, but I can tell that the force is strong with this one. Good luck man! Sounds like your dream shot right there.

I will disagree, once a fudgin gain, with everybody.
    Who gives a crap.

"I'm going to be one of the best guitarists in North America, with the help of [this guy who knows stuff]" -- that grabs my attention and I can get behind that.

But, I *knew* that's what you meant !!!! I'm on fire myself right now about learning music stuff. You know what I mean, and I still owe you one.

I did take 1 private class with him. $65 an hour. And I'd say it was worth it.

The most important key points that he taught me was:
Start simple, and play conservatively. Don't worry i you don't have the vocabulary down. Just get the melody and rhythm down, and then start branching out from there.

    Also, he taught me:
For 30 minutes play analytical, by using your theory knowledge.
For the next 30 minutes, throw all that out, and play like a "child in the playground" by just trying things.
The two contrasting methods will give you new ideas.

He also taught me some basic things about harmonizing scales with chords, and he taught me how to add up to 5 extensions to the mixolydian scale to make it symmetrical. cool stuff.

Good luck and have fun. Yes, he is a monster player. Don't feel intimidated.

I saw him live at the Mezetta, downtown, and he was so above my level that i couldn't even understand the music that he was playing... aw well.

That first point is one that I've tried to keep in mind for a while. Now I can play out and a few hip lines.. but if you have rhythm and can improvise a good melody that will make you more memorable than someone playing 8th note altered scales for hours...

The second one.. I got some of those basics from Roy Patterson last year, I can sort of throw chords into solos, and make basic harmonised scales.. but Lorne is one of the masters of that so I'm really looking forward to it.
