Default Which pickup to experiment with?

Hey guys. I have a seven string with a JB in it, and when i play on my pod through my headphones i have a hard time getting tight sounds.

I've been thinking about getting a custom or a custom 5 for the bridge, for i believe they produce less overtones and have a tighter bass. I never tried them, so i have to ask you, does my guessing proceeds?

Also, my guitar is mahogany body and neck, with rosewood fingerboard, so if i get a ceramic will the sound be even darker than it already is?

If you want to stick with Duncans I suggest the Distortion 7.

Yeah, i thought of it, but wouldn't it be too dark? Isn't ceramic darker than alnico 5?

Ceramic is brighter actually. Generally at least.

I had a guitar with a Full Shred in it... pretty decent. Then I got bored with it and put a JB. I had the same complaints as you with it (though I like the JB in other guitars). So I put the Distortion and it's great!

the distortion is just a jb with a thick ceramic mag. if you can find one of those it would be a lot cheaper then a new pickup!

Try a different pick maybe. My JB can sound anywhere from "harsh", to spongy, and/or tight just by using different materials and gauges.

    Warmoth...

Body is mahogany with a maple cap, neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard.

I like the JB a lot in an alder strat with maple fretboard that I have here.

Gary: Nice! There's one warmoth 7 string, the one with the carved top, that i find beautiful. As i suffer from G.A.S. i plan on one day getting one, heheheeh.

JacksonDistortion: Thanks for the tip bro! I actually do use a Jazz III nowadays, which is the tightest i could get this far. Do you use which pic?

Jake: How much would it cost? Wouldn't i ruin the pickup if traded the magnets by myself?

Since yesterday I've been using a Cool Picks Juratex Guitar Pick in thin gauge and it helps the JB to be very tight (played Metallica's "Dyer's Eve for the ultimate test). Before that, as far as recent history, a Dunlop Tortex pick .73mm was very tight, and allowed all tones that exsist in a stock JB to be heard (which was mostly treble and midrange) and after that pick I used a D'Andrea Delrex pick 1.14mm and that made the JB seem spongy; and I've heard dudes mention that the JB had a "spongy bass" or alnico 5 magnets made pickups "spongy". Maybe it was the pick they were using at the time that gave them that impression of the JB, just like I've gotten. Interesting differences from pick switching. I thought I'd suggest a pick change because it's cheaper and may be the real problem solver.

if you can find an extra think one that is. normal sized ceramic mags and alnico's only cost a few $'s and its easy as hell changing magnets in a pickup! takes a few minutes and you shouldn't ruin the pickup at all. do a search on here on magnet swaping, everyone on here is doing it!

There's Full Shred 7 string which Duncan just released at NAMM sometimes ago.
Maybe worth trying for your mahogany 7 string guitar,if your guitar is dark enough (acoustically) that is
