I want to get a guitar, but what would be the right one? I know I should buy used, but I've also got a ****ty amp. (MG10CD) So, can someone gather me up a guitar and amp combo for under $200? I heard a Vox is pretty good.

2 words. PAWN SHOP!

SX telecaster
These get good reviews, usually at least as good as the $229 squier stds.
I think this is the kind I6 has?
I hear their strats are not as good.
Something like this would put you slightly over budget but it'd be worth it IMO.
PS> AMP FIRST then worry about the guitar.
In fact if you could devote all your budget to the amp right now, I'd do it. Even a piece of crap will sound better thru something like a 5W blackheart, rather than than thru a MG10.

man, when I went from a fender frontman 25 to a blackheart 5W, I was BLOWN AWAY. I was using 2 Squier Teles at that time. I had always wondered why i didn't sound so great until I got a decent tube amp. When I got the blackheart I realized that is what had been holding my tone back for 4 years.
Even a squier bullet would sound OK through one of the "decent" modeling, hybrid, or entry-level tube amps.
Hell I played a bullet through a Mesa the other week and I thought "hey this could be a lot worse!" It's just those damn squier electronics. You can find bullets that have passable necks and bodies, and from there it's just a gradual process of pickups and parts.

Good point. I say buy a Epi les paul special, A blackheart Killer ant, and a good overdrive. Thats a good beginer set up. You could even go Ht-5, a Squire guitar and a good overdrive. Any combination in that price range is still gonna set you back $500. $200 bucks is a hard budget to work with.

to the OP, What kinda guitar have you already?

My first guitar was a $120 Ibanez GRX40 and I got a $75 Crate GX20M. So, if all you wanna do is play, you can make $200 work, but it won't be pretty.
Side note: Oh man i totally forgot all about that guitar. I sold it for a bag of mushrooms. Damn, I used to be stupid. It had an SSL-1 and a Super Disortion. That would've been pretty cool with my current stuff.

weren't even great shrooms neither. I ended up getting bored and kicking it in a hotel room with some idiots watching Harrison Ford in Firewall.
Here's an idea of what it was like, and why not to sell a guitar for drugs. You'll end up with this, and it's not as interesting as it would seem:

A great Vox amp would be the VT series fersure. I have the 50 watt because I'm in a band and my drummer plays too flipping hard so its perfect. You may want to look at the 15 watt or maybe the 30 watt if you want it to go kinda loud. the VT is tube modeling also so it has some tubeyness in it but its also modeling. I mainly got this amp so I could choose from the 15 amps modes it has and get a whole boat load of tone out of it. It goes from cleans to overdriven tone to punch-you-in-the-face-with-a-bullet distortionness.
But yeah 200 bucks? If I were you I would look at garage sales and pawn shops...and bump your budget about 50-100 bucks

88-89 fender HM Strat(Dimarzio pickups)
Squier Standard Strat(JB)
Boss SD-1, Boss DD-7, EXH Holy Grail Reverb, Morley Power Wah, Boss Tuner
Vox NightTrain 50 to a Crate gx10 Cab.
My Band
Plenty of pre-owned bargains to be had with the word Yamaha on the headstock. Pacifica series, RGX (Pacifica's HSH cousin), a Tele-ish model. Squier MII Standard series. Cort. Ibanez RG321MH. American members seem to rate the SX range. (Not available in my country.)
For home practice, you could do worse than to start with a Roland MicroCube or one of the Vox modelling combos. The new Fender Mustang modelling amps look interesting but may be out of your price bracket.

Dear guitarkidd,
Welcome, I haven't noticed you before. But then again, I'm old and may not see well.
A few things first: What guitar do you have? What music do you want to play? How long have you been playing?
Next - assuming you are really 12, a little financial reality check. You ARE NOT going to get a great guitar and amp for $200. So let's just get over that. since you are 12, however, I don't think that's going to hurt too much for the next year so.
Second - the amp makes the sound. Lousy guitar, great amp = ok. Real righteous 59 LP into MG10 = fart. I'm guessing you need a great amp more improtantly.
Third - depending on your skill; Go find someone who can play (and drive) to pick a great used guitar/amp for you. Which brings us back to point #1 Find an amp for $200. Then start mowing lawns when you are not practicing.
Between birthdays, Christmas, etc....you'll have a decent set up and the chops to go with it in no time (meaning less than 24 months).
Hey Aceman,
I do not have a guitar right now. I don't know how to play that well either. But, I do know quite a bit. I like to play Metal. Been playing for about a year now.
So, everyone wants me to get a good amp. I will be playing on stage a little.
P.S. I do not like Telecasters.
