He's 12 man, and that behringer is a million times better than anything I had when I was a kid. The way I used to get distortion was to put headphones around my acoustic, plug that into the cassette recorder input, and then jack the recording levels to high heaven.

those RP things aren't half bad. I use one (an older RP80) as a headphone "amp" or into computer speakers if it's 3:30 am and I feel the urge to rock.

I think this is the kind I6 has?
I hear their strats are not as good.

Something like this would put you slightly over budget but it'd be worth it IMO.

PS> AMP FIRST then worry about the guitar.
In fact if you could devote all your budget to the amp right now, I'd do it. Even a piece of crap will sound better thru something like a 5W blackheart, rather than than thru a MG10.
+1 Either a used Squire or new and either seperate or as a combo is a good start. Pawn shop, Ebay or MF or GC.

More or less, Ibanez, probably traditional, I hate fuzz, but LOADS of distortion, yeah. I also like a Classic Rock tone, sometimes. Like 15%. I wouldn't mind an LP Junior, but they're pretty weighty. Good Enuff?

I present to you the Rondo version of the Ibanez

and at 115 it aint bad
probably won't be as good as a real Ibanez but in the ball park

the Gio series from Ibanez is like the Epiphones of Gibson ( just not as good )
at 149 it is abit much for your budget

step into the real RG series with the RG120
wizard II neck they got this red one used for 143

don't know how you feel bout whammy bars
but you will want at least one in the house with one
why not something like this SA260FM

I just had to post a second image of that one as they have it on sale used fairly cheap
    and it is just beautiful

    EDIT
and the pictures are the links to MF and Rondo

Not really. They don't weigh any more than a Strat really.
