Well my main guitar is all mahogany and has plenty of warmth as is. I'm using a Bare Knuckle VHII pickup now and it has a roughcast A5. It's my favorite bridge pickup so far.

Had a '59b with a8 in the bridge of a kramer. That was one of my favorite bridge pickups just because it cleaned up so well.

Tried it in a custom/vhpaf hybrid of sorts - not nearly as good there.

IMO it has ridiculous midrange so I prefer it in lower winds.

    I've tried A8 into SH14 and SH11 pickups (they're the same, that's my sound).
Got mounted on a Charvel Model6 (pretty standard woods in here) and the other one on a Carvin V220 (all maple+ebony fingerboard, totally bright).
I liked the punch of the A8 bar: great dynamics, nice full sounding highs. I found the bass response totally crap though. It was like the E string was cold, sterile, no more of impact.
I gave a try on A5 rough cast. Didn't like it either on the Charvel (got back on the factory A5 polished), fine on the Carvin - it gives it a good bass response.
