Default How about a "air" JB?

I like the JB a lot but always wondered what one would sound like with a weakened alnico 5? Sweeter? More P.A.F like? I know the output would drop and to me that aint exactly a bad thing since the stock JB has a pretty high output. i have the needed things to air my TB-4 but wanted to hear some opinions first? The air idea did wonders for the tone zone and other models.

isn't the air mod involving the screws and the slugs not touching the magnet?

That is correct. It gives the effect of a aged magnet for a more mellow tone. I did it to a 59b and that sucker never sounded better! Sweeter highs and not so boomy in the bass. Sounds like a old P.A.F that really is from 1959! Lol

you can't fit the nylon airbucker keeper bars to a standard JB; i've heard of other nylon pieces in airbuckers but have only seen the keeper bars myself (the long piece that the pole screws go through).

you could wrap a couple layers of tape around the magnet; anything that puts about 3mm of non-conductive material between the magnet and the pole screws/slugs will do the trick.

i agree that the JB is a good candidate for this type of mod as it has prominent top and low-end and output to spare, and sounds good with an A2 mag swapped in.

    see also the "half-air" mod.

I have some dimarzio air pu's that dont even use the nylon spacers just have a gap. When i did the air mod to my 59b i did not use any plastic spacers just the equal air gaps.
