Default RTM VS JB2 what's the diff?

I have a JB in my Charvel and I dig the sound but I would like to change it up a bit. RTM seem to be similar specs to JB2, is it worth buying a new pu or I should stick with mag swap? Heck a lot cheaper.

What would you like to change about the sound of the JB?

The overall sound is pretty close . I was looking a for slightly less pronounced high and more articulate, and just a bit fuller bass. I am big fan Warren DeMartini sound so was trying to get close to that.

Jb2 lacks bass, I think it will not suit your taste.

An A8 magnet should fill out the bass and low-mids for you.

I've never personally tried a JB8 but I've seen some very good reviews of it here. Try searching the pickup room for JB8 and see what you come up with.

I was thinking of A8 also. I am running Dual Terror through a 1x10 open back cab, but I am picking up a 1x12 closed back cab. So before I start switch mags I am going to try this new setup. I think being an open back and being a 10" speaker is probably killing some of the bass.

Definitely. That cab will be a huge change, all else being roughly equal.

As soon as you play through a cab with a bigger speaker all your troubles will disappear...

Open back 1x10 = bass murderer

You get better articulation with shortened pole pieces. I shortened and radiused the poles on my JB so the poles are flush with the baseplate and the clarity improved greatly.

    Absolutely.

I think changing the pickup magnets compared to getting a descent amp and speaker cab is like trying to bail out the Titanic with a teaspoon. You are going about it all wrong, and might be making changes that won't do much, and might be the wrong changes if you had a descent rig.

Save your money and get a Laney AOR and a descent 4x12.

Then decide if the JB isn't cutting it, because my JB works just fine.

I'm not sure I'd suggest an AOR, some of those are pretty muffled sounding, not to everyone's taste. I've heard great ones, too, though.

But I'd definitely wait for pickup hacking until you are happier with your amp & speaker config. Open back plus closed back is a pretty nice combo for openess and punch. And mixing different speaker sizes is pretty effective as well. You might also consider speaker swaps as another way of tuning your rig, but I'd see how the two cabinets mix before messing with that.

Given the prices of magnets, picking up a few to have on hand isn't a bad idea. I'd definitely check out A2, Unoriented A5 (search for UOA5 on the boards, definitely a rising star), and A8, for the JB.

As for differences, the RTM is a custom shop, overwound JB with A2 magnet. So basically a little hotter and darker, smoother, less harsh of an upper mid peak. Of course, some people LOVE that blazing upper mid peak, that's what makes the stock JB so crazy for leads... Still, it's interesting that a lot of JB endorsers are now using JB2 variations.

I'd play with magnet swaps before shelling out for a Custom Shop pickup. At least you'll have a better idea what to expect from the RTM if you do decide to go that route.
