    Default P-rails are thrashy??

I have some queations for you wiring gurus. I recently finished building a mahogany bodied guitar with p- rails in it. I chose mahogany for its warm tone. however, I have a thrashy tone. what could this be? (there is a Metal nut on it. does that matter?)

    thanks.

Define thrashy.....is that scooped, high output and metal-like??

Series mode is pretty thick even with the standard version. If you have the hot then its really not a vintage style pup at all, even in parallel.

Every guitar sounds different. I have a mostly mahogany Parker PM20pro with ebony board which is thin and sizzling in tone, wheras my Gibby and Epi SG's are much thicker despite having much less wood in them. The Epi has the Prails B & N in it. Pretty thick tone, and hotter o/p than the Gibson with a Custom5

The metal nut will mainly have an effect on tone with open strings.

Depending on your definition of "thrashy", it sounds like something wrong with your wiring. Like AlexR said, the P-Rails is a pretty thick toned pup and the P-Rails Hot is even thicker.

Way too much high-end. I realized that I forgot to mention that there is a 24 fret neck. could the have any affect on the tone?

I'm working on installing P-Rails into a 24-fret guitar, and I could let you know how it turns out. But it's not a Mahogany body, nor do I have a metal nut, and I'm wiring it in HSH configuration, so frankly our builds will not be very comparable.

Sounds like you put the coils in parallel instead of series?

Or one coil is out of phase. It's really easy to accidentally flip the rail in production, although it only turns up less than one in a thousand. Reversing the red and green wires fixes it. If you have switches on it to select P90 or Rail coil, the big test is whether it sounds bigger and more regular in P90 or rail mode. If so, then that means when the two coils are out of phase with one another.
